Wednesday's Tribune;

Bears standout Matt Forte stood on a platform in the James R. Thompson Center plaza — his makeshift stage — and read a statement appealing for Cook County to change how it establishes bail for people awaiting trial.

“We must lead the movement to end the money bail system,” the retired running back said during the Tuesday morning rally. “In America, we promise equal justice for rich, for poor, for black, for white, for men and women, and yet we’re not holding up to our end of the bargain in Chicago.”

Rampant crime in Chicago. Let's make it easier for the criminals to get back on the street?

You shouldn't sit in jail awaiting trial for years because you couldn't afford $500. In some cases for a crime you didn't commit.

What is his thinking behind that statement? I always associate bail with the type of crime committed and how dangerous the person may be that was arrested.

Get an education, then get a job. Then they won't be impoverished when they're arrested.

California just passed a law and many other states are doing the same thing to reform the cash bail system. Of course is someone is a true flight risk or danger to society, they need to be locked up. The point of the reform is to keep people out of jail for minor crimes simply because they are poor. It has the positive financial impact of not having to pay to house them. It is very expensive to lock people up, and it makes no sense to lock people up for minor crimes before trial.

Each case is different, Dart is giving violent criminals house arrest and they re offend and get house arrest again. Drug cases should be I bonds, anything involving weapons should have a high bond.

Cash bonds are fine if the government can provide a "speedy" trial. A cash bond combined with "oh, you're trial will be in four months" is a bit of a problem.

But in the end, it depends on the crime and the criminal.

Another problem is the concept of bail bondsmen. An innocent person has the choice to either put the whole amount of money up or pay them a percentage they will never get back or sit in jail. I don't see why the government can't provide the same service and give the money back if they are found to be not guilty.

This would be the gist of what he is standing up to promote. Forte is a thoughtful and smart guy and has probably done quite a bit of homework on
this or at least has read up on it. I don't ever remember him being a big mouth know it all that shoots his mouth off about social issues.

Interesting not one mention of sympathy to any of the victims of crime in Chicago in this thread. California had to do something. Their jail system is overloaded with illegals. Without cash bail much faith will have to be put on the judges discression which is scary. Somebody brought up cost. What's the difference of supporting a criminal on welfare or in jail?

Most violent criminals aren't on welfare. If they were it's hundreds of dollars for welfare and thousands for jail.

Free housing, health insurance, food for them, their kids, kids mothers that they've abandoned. Only hundreds of dollars drain when they're out? They don't have $500 for bail. Violent criminals too busy monitoring the stock market to bother
to find time for welfare? We'll save a bundle when they're released? The solution is to buld more prisons as our great leader has mentioned.

You may want to work on that math and some of your facts.

There are only about 80k section 8 vouchers in Illinois and very few men have them. MANY working people who aren't criminals have Medicaid and I doubt MANY people in gangs have Medicaid. IF an individual male is on welfare he is getting no more than a couple hundred dollars. Criminals like MANY working poor people don't have hundreds or thousands of dollars saved up.

It cost significantly less to not house people in jail. It cost anywhere from $30k to $60k annually to house an inmate.

Fuck the positive financial impact. It's un-fucking-just in so many situations to imprison someone (who has not yet been convicted) because they can't afford bail.

Illinois is one of 8 states to have more welfare recipients than employed. And the national unemployment % is at a 50 year low. Unbelievable! If a male criminal is too stupid to apply for welfare benefits, he's reaping the benefits from family and girlfriends that do, or creating more future welfare recipients.

You realize welfare isn't glorious? MANY working poor are on SNAP because they can't make a livable wage. Regardless you were clearly wrong about cost.

Hi John Kirk

Yeah, I'm starting to buy in to this theory.

Forte is selling customized video greetings or messages for $325 at cameo.com. Most of the other athletes or celebrities are "b" types or have had financial problems. Hey the Howard Stern wack pack is there. Do the math.
