He was on with Dahl a couple of weeks ago (Dahl's son was involved in the "documentary"/"puff piece" send off that NBC SportsNet did) and he had an interesting comment. When he started broadcasting, he took a tip from someone (I can't recall who) that said roughly, "Hawk, you are in a two team town. Right off the bat 50% of the population is going to hate you. And you probably aren't going to make 100% of that other half happy either, so get used to being generally disliked." I thought that was a pretty interesting piece of advice to give, although suggesting that the town is split 50/50 is a little generous for the Sox.

Maybe he said that to make him feel better about being unlikable.

Uecker, for not being a "classically trained" broadcaster, arguably has the greatest tree in recent memory: Pat Hughes, Len Kasper, Jim Powell, Cory Provus, and Joe Block were all his understudies and all went on to be primary play-by-play guys someplace else: here, here, Atlanta, Minnesota, and Pittsburgh, respectively.

Well, he's 80, and probably a hard 80 at that. Wouldn't be surprised.

I've said it a million times but it rubs me the wrong way that a southerner who played for the Red Sox and A's is supposed to be some kind of Chicago baseball legend. He's not from here and he never played here. It makes all his homerism ring hollow. Go on Youtube and you can find Yankees games from the late '80s where there's a familiar voice doing familiar shtick but for them. Like, Mike Shannon is just as bad as any bad baseball broadcaster's been, if not worse, but he grew up in St. Louis and played for the Cardinals, he's never been anywhere else, so if nothing else, I get it. I don't get Hawk.

he's 77. ya he's not from here, but he came here in the 80s and been loyal with them since. who can blame him for kissing up to management and jerry. smart guy. But he's been with the Sox 30 some years and a generation grew up with him here. To many the only wsox tv annoucer theyve ever known is hawk.

LIke Pat Hughes for the Cubs is like how you think of Hawk for me. I hate his broadcasting style and really don't consider him a 'cub' or 'chicago guy'. But a generation of cub fans have grew up with him on the radio and being with Santo all those years didnt hurt his 'Chicago cred'.

I'll always blame anyone for kissing up to the guy who engineered the 1994 strike, which, ironically, may well have cost the White Sox a World Series.

Legitimate argument for the best broadcaster in American sports history.

Legend. I'll miss him.

I wonder who will steal Hawk's shtick now. You know it's going to happen. Some guy will start doing 'can of corn' and 'put it on the board'.

Nobody will.

All anyone wants now is "This guy's WAR is 8.7, which puts him at the top of the class despite his 4-7 record".

Vanilla nobodies is the flavor of the day now for announcers.

I long for the days of a drunk Harry Carray in underwear with a net in the booth.

When was Len under Ueker?

I thought Len came from the Marlins.

Speaking of old baseball announcers, I've been poking around YouTube and that old Atlanta crew of Skip, Pete, Don Sutton, and Ernie Johnson Sr. is tough to beat. I especially like Ernie Johnson's Yankee accent (very you-cant-get-they-uh-from-hee-uh), that feels like a nice little connection to the Boston Braves.

I thought u said he worked under Ueker. That would mean he broadcasted Brewer baseball.

I believe he did the role with the Brewers that was most similar to what ZZ has now with the Cubs - pre/post, scores in game, the occasional inning here and there. I don't remember if he was TV or radio there.

I'll never understand the hatred of some Cubs fans of the Sox announcer especially since the Cubs don't care about the Sox unless they are playing them.

Just saw the clip where the Sox came out and tipped their caps to him, also showed the Cubs doing the same which was beyond classy considering Hawk’s professed hatred of them.
