Joe Maddon will remain as #Cubs manager through 2019, but there will be no extension. The Cubs will make a determination on his future after 2019 when his 5-year, $28 million contract expires.

Has there been anything reported on Maddon's thoughts on an extension?

He's 65 at the end of the 2019 season. Maybe he doesn't want to hitch on for 4-5 more years.

He's been running a big league ballclub for the last 13 years.

Wow. Adding another distraction to a team already full of them.

Remember, #Cubs front office trio Theo Epstein, Jed Hoyer and Jason McLeod also worked on last year of their contracts without an extension in 2016, and things worked out quite well..

Should the Braves have fired Bobby Cox after all those post season failures ? Which one should’ve been the lynchpin for it ?

Gives the FO a scapegoat for next year's failure.

He's kind of like Guillen in the fact you think his act his old and then you get Robin Ventura.

I think a WS appearance would do the trick.

Playoffs is fine minus the frequent panicking.

So a loss in the 2019 Wild Card game is "fine"?

Nas likes losing as long as you lose later than some other teams.

I don't consider that playoffs.

I think WS or bust is unfair to any manager.

I don't consider that playoffs.

Cubs fans do. I've heard "four straight playoff appearances from MANY here on this board. Some even refer to the 2015 game against the Pirates as a 'postseason series' win.

And no one is pretending it is that simple. But you factor in expectations and a Wild Card game loss is a disappointment this season, even if technically the season was still somewhat successful.

edit: The Wild Card round is a postseason game. The Cubs lost in the Wild Card round. It isn't about what someone considers it. It is about what it is.

For all you youngsters out there, this is what it was like to be a Bears fan in the mid 80s. One championship and a whole bunch of bed shitting. SAD.

They're on the Blackhawks plan. Expect another title in 2019 and then a third in 2021. At that point, they'll need to reload.

Learn something. One game is not a series.

Refusing to give an extension this winter still leaves an opening for Joe to see what's out there and broker an exit.

Good grief. For the players the 2018 season ends up being a kick to the nuts and now they get another kick with this news. I'm sure they're excited for more costume parties and magicians.
