I think the board is at its best when deep debates/arguments spiral into new threads that take the conversation in a different direction. Then after that a couple parody threads may pop up making fun of something someone said or the conversation in general, in a good natured way as opposed to something obviously hostile. If I'm checking a thread out in the morning then by mid afternoon or whatever I see that it's exploded into new threads and/or parody threads then I honestly get excited to read and catch up on everything. I don't mind the politics in general but basically the 2016 election precipitated everything we're seeing now in those threads and I guess I'm just fatigued by how long we've been going at it. Trump got elected in 2016 but we've been talking about him (and ancillary issues) since maybe late 2015, so almost three years now. I alternate between skipping and reading what I want but I could see how others just say fuck it and stop visiting the board all together.

I think what makes this board different than others is the community; we're mostly an anonymous community but less so than a place like Reddit in, while JORR and I may not know e/o IRL, I still know JORR as a poster given the history here and I know where he's coming from and what he's likely to say. The mechanics of the board (having a single, recognizable account you log into to use on a regular basis) make it more or less easy to have a genuine debate with someone on a variety of topics. I appreciate that the most and it's probably why I keep coming back. I agree with TM who said (I think) that it's probably some combination of losing posters and not having new blood come in that's laid bare the declining quality of the board. Not sure if you can fix that though.

The youngest among us is now probably late 20s at the least. There are no young people joining a local message board... there's too much other stuff online that they are raised on. For better or worse, this board will live and die with a couple hundred core posters and some peripheral members who are in similar age groups.

I mean, FF is middle-aged, for God's sake.

Spaulding is great. She's got bigger balls than anyone here. On MANY levels her position here is difficult. An army of one really. We don't make it any easier and that has to be recognized and appreciated. And I'd say we probably can't and don't want to change the approach we take with one another. We could use more Spaulding types. Skin that thick isnt easy to come by even with those possessing a gonad or two.

I agree that the board is a relic of the past. But I only found the board because I was looking for Chicago-specific radio talk - I wonder how true that is for others. So I guess maybe more so than generational/tech issues, I wonder if it's just an interest thing - how many people out there are looking for a place to rant or read about Chicago sports radio? Idk if search engine optimization stuff is something the wisemen think about but again I only found this place after searching for very specific keywords in Google.
