Depends on how good the drinks are. Even at a bar I always feel like I'm an asshole if I don't tip at least a dollar or 2 for a drink.

Usually $1-$2 a drink and 20% or so of the food bill, unless it is under a certain amount.

$1 for a beer/wine, $2 for a drink should work, yeah?

If I'm at the bar, I tip $1 for bottled beer and $2 for other drinks.

If I'm at a restaurant table, I just tip 20% of the entire bill.

Hosted a memorial dinner last night. Food was like 60, drinks were like 120. Just wasnt sure how to tip.

I gave him $30 on a bill of $182

To be clear, of course you tip for drinks at the bar. Im talking about at a sit down restaurant when the liquor is a big part of the bill.

...someone is still making and bringing those drinks to you? Two someones. Why would you not tip, or tip way less?

This....except if it's a tab...usually around 20-25% of the whole shebang, unless the service sucks.

I doubled my tipping percentage for pizza delivery because of you and now you attack former hard working waiters like myself with this question?

Because it's a thing people say. I did tip him on the liquor. I've just never been in that situation before.

I believe the thought process is if you stay in a restaurant and order a couple $100 bottles of wine for after dinner, you shouldnt have to tip 20%.

Im an overtipper in general, though. Usually Ill do 30% but last night caught me off guard.

So, the answer is: Yes, you still tip like you normally would.

The kid got 18%. Maybe Ill go back and lay another $20 on him. Seriously.

Like I said, caught off guard.

I guess I don't know who those people are saying that thing, because I've never heard it.

I think there are some people who would disagree. Maybe it's a generational thing because most people I've heard talk about tipping differently based on liquor are older.

I didnt make this up though. It IS a thing. It may be a cheapo thing, but a THING nonetheless.

You're tipping because they are performing a service.

Yeah I've known a few "cheapos", but they've never said that.

18% isn't a bad tip. Its not great, but its not terrible either. I'm sure your server has had better and worse tips.

Ok. Fair enough. I'll let my contacts know to put you back on the good list.

I guess I can see some balking at tipping on a $40 tumbler of scotch or a $100 bottle of wine the way they would on well drinks and house wine. I mean the server generally did not work harder for that. I usually just make the normal tip. Another point is when I am at a place that charges such an amount for wine that it becomes a question there is usually a sommelier earning a bit or the fancy atmosphere makes it feel more proper.

I know why I'm tipping. I probably am in the top 10% of the tipping scale as I usually do 30% minimum.

I'm just asking about this particular quirk.

And for those of you who never heard of this, type it into your google machine, you will find many discussion based on this exact thing. So while you may have not come across it, it does exist.

Jack can afford to give away a pen with all his money. Believe me. He gives me a check for 19.45. He didn't have a Coke. Ho, ho, ho!

Oh and the absolute minimum for pizza delivery is $5, but really you should be doing $7-8

My problem is going 7-8 on pizza delivery is that my total is usually 16-18 bucks...have a hard time justifying 50% in my brain. My pizza minimum is 5...if a larger order, usually around 20-30%

But you could pick it up. Look at it as a convenience price for not having to leave your house.

Yes, I could...but I don't...5 still seems completely reasonable to me on a smaller order.
