Same kinda thing with their Marquette King obsession. They aren't too hard to figure out.

To be fair, Deadspin has never been worse about this sort of thing than with the emphatically white Chris Kluwe, who was the throbbing brain of the NFL for belching up old Magary columns and calling everyone he didn't like an epic fucking shitgarbage cocklord douchewaterslide assbutt. Then he threw it all away by making fun of kids who got raped. As one does.

I had forgotten about Kluwe, wow. I wonder how they'd feel about him now or even how he'd feel about them.

When we go to the stars you won't be able to build your own home in space. If a room in gateway station was good enough for Ellen Ripley, then it's good enough for me

Not to be too myopic here, but I do have to wonder how much of the "NFL is BACK, BABY!" narrative is because the Bears, a team with a large regional and national fanbase, are finally playing meaningful games again after three and a half years of utter shit. There's more to it than that, of course, but it certainly isn't hurting.

I could be wildly off but I never got the impression that the Giants fanbase extended that far beyond the tri-state area and pockets of Florida and North Carolina where New Yorkers go. Certainly not a national team on the level of the Packers, Steelers, Cowboys, Bears, Raiders, or Dolphins (there aren't many but everywhere you go I'm pretty sure there is always That One Dolphins Guy). Even Broncos fans seem to cover the country more than Giants fans. But of course I'm not a huge NFL fan so again I could be completely wrong here.

Maybe true to a partial extent. I would put the Saints as one of the really wide fanbases too, for how long were the only non-Floridian NFL team from SEC country?

The Falcons dont really count.

Jeb Lund wrote something years ago about how so much of the SEC chest-thumping is because NFL teams of the Southeast have pretty much always been shit, so college is where they had to top out to keep their pride.

I just think of Giants fans as either WFAN creatures who are somehow louder, fatter, and dumber than Score callers, or uber-WASPy Westchester/Connecticut folk who make a big show out of referring to the owner as MISTER Mara. It doesn't seem like something you can get in on from afar.

You and I weren't around for those Belichick defenses with LT though. I dont think we understand how big of a deal that was, especially growing up in Bears country where everything that happened within 10 years of 85 is swallowed by that black hole.

That is true. It's sort of like being unable to wrap my head around the Washington Redskins being a quasi-dynasty (or whatever you want to call winning the years where the 49ers didn't).

I also dont understand the divide between Jets and Giants or the seeming lack of any sort of rivalry between the two.

I think Jets fans are usually Long Islanders and/or mopey Jews.

Quote:
What a damn mess. For years the NFL used the prospect of moving a team to L.A. as a cudgel with which to beat cities into going along with stadium financing scams, and then when they finally followed through on the threat—torturing and destroying two NFL fanbases in the process—they ended up with two teams playing in a city that definitively doesn’t want either of them. Maybe the NFL isn’t as indestructible as it thought it was, and maybe fans aren’t eager to unthinkingly swallow up whatever product the league throws at them.

No one cared about the Rams in St. Louis and they never should have moved there to begin with. The Chargers are fucked but the Rams will be fine.

Quote:
I can’t wait until Stan Kroenke’s massive Inglewood stadium opens and is treated like a dormant volcano by the locals. It would be nothing less than the NFL deserves.

u mad

attendance schmendance, NFL's a tv/fantasy/gambling sport in 2018. who cares if anyone actually shows up to the games. And you'd have to be a criminally stupid owner to lose money owning a franchise in a salary-capped league with annual revenue sharing that's greater than the salary cap by 50%+:

We finally got the quote we've all been waiting for and surprise surprise it was about LeBron.

Quote:
This is bad, but really, this is good.

If you dare you can read the whole paragraph:

Quote:
This is bad, but really, this is good. Even a basketball mind like James, the de facto coach of all his teams and a cosmic-brained basketball visionary, will take a while to suss out how these odd pieces fit together. Growing pains! What a treat it is to see a GOAT in his late prime have to go through them—and not just with another generically ass Cavs squad. These Lakers have talent, lots of it, but of a flavor different from the one he’s gotten accustomed to. This season brings a welcome disruption to the familiar pattern of LeBron Plus Shooters Wins The East. Suddenly every single one of those variables is being tweaked.
