Per Mlbtraderumors and Bruce Levine:

Fresh off his second straight 20-home run season, one which featured unspectacular overall production (104 wRC+) across 496 plate appearances, White Sox DH/corner infielder Matt Davidson would like to do more pitching in 2019. Davidson, who chipped in three scoreless innings of one-hit ball as a reliever in 2018, will spend the offseason working to become a legitimate two-way player, Bruce Levine of 670 The Score reports. The White Sox have okayed Davidson’s plan and will be able to monitor his progress in the offseason, given that he lives close to their Arizona-based complex, according to Levine. Davidson was a high school pitcher, notes Levine, who writes that Chicago’s coaching staff sees “decent movement” in his 92 mph fastball. Should Davidson achieve his goal, the soon-to-be 28-year-old would work out of the bullpen – albeit not in high-leverage situations – as a way to help keep the team’s conventional relievers fresh, per Levine.

I would have thought that he was more high on his ability as an everyday player than to try this. Seems desperate.

Send him to Milwaukee. They need relievers. They just pitched 45 innings in 7 games.

Seriously, its a good idea. The problem with Davidson is that he has like zero utility, a good offensive bat is a nice thing to have (especially on this shit squad) but if he cant play defense, or run, or help in any other way its very mediocre. If Matt Davidson finds a way to even be a decent backend piece of a bullpen, basically a guy you can trust to pitch 2 or 3 innings with a 4-5 run lead if the starter hits his pitch limit early, that's something. On the off chance he is actually good at it now you're in some weird territory.

It's sad that if this works out his value to the Sox will still be in dealing in him for prospects because they are still horrible.

This may be the future. Scouting position players that happen to have a pretty good curveball.

Not until Spring Training.

Can't jinx these things.

This idea is an elbow surgery waiting to happen. Dude, just work on your hitting and fielding.

There are literally hundreds of actual trained pitchers out there to get a couple outs from the bullpen.

A stupid move. Even stupider for the organization to green light it and use team resources for this endeavour.

Maybe used up and spit out professional relievers would greenlight it.

Cody Allen is a FA. Anybody want him? I don't.

I disagree. In the age of short benches a versatile player is very valuable. If he can give them 25-30 innings that could allow them to carry 12 pitchers instead of 13 then they can have another left handed bat off the bench like Delmonico or Palka. It could change the dynamic of the roster.

Yeah, this more about taking pressure off everybodys' taxed bullpens. When you have 5-6 guys pitching in 60-70 games, it's too fucking much and if they don't get injured, they fall by the wayside with dead arms. This about trying not to fuck up peoples' professional careers. Let's face it. They are protecting starters(big investment)by shitting all over relievers(small investment).

With any kind of scouting on him, teams are going to rip him to shreds. Right now, it is a novelty, although the trend towards having bench guys throw is speeding up.

But the White Sox are still going to get blown out an awful lot in 2019, and the Charlotte Shuttle is going to get clogged at times with the 10-day minimum stay in the minors unless there is a DL stint. So if Matt can pitch 1 1/3 once every 12 games in a blowout, that's probably 10-11 appearances a year excluding the ASB and September callup season.

The question is can he consistently get through 1 1/3 innings in 25 pitches or less?

This is stupid. Develop your starters to get at least 18 outs per game and this becomes a non issue.

Craig Counsell does not feel that is necessary

Things dont always go to plan and if you can get 2-for-1 roster spot that's useful.

This is really the best way to look at this decision.

He has an avg fastball and flashed an above avg curveball. Now he has an off season and spring training to work as a pitcher and refine his delivery and improve his command. No one is saying he’s going to be a lock down closer. Best case scenario he takes Hector Santiago’s job of grenade jumper and hopefully there are fewer starts that require a grenade jumper next year. It’s worth a shot.

You know a team is really horseshit when a below average hitter is getting play as a 12th pitcher on a roster. This is just a sad joke.

At 28? Nah, I think that train left the station. Last year, he started looking for walks. You know, get that power hitter fake OBP up, ala Done and LaRoach
