Seriously, kudos for adopting a shelter pet. I'm more of a dog guy but appreciate the rescue of any shelter pet.

She may just need to get comfortable to her new surroundings and then she will be a bit more behaved?

Both of our rescue cats have been declawed. They are indoor cats. This was done when they were kittens at the same time as their spay & neuter. It affected them for about 8 hours. They are both 5 now and are fine. If you do get her declawed, they have to use as special litter for about a week.

Give the cat plenty of time to adjust to her new surroundings. Put out multiple litter boxes and bowls of water to help her feel more comfortable. If she starts spraying around the house, try changing the litter or add/remove the cover from one of the litter boxes. Make sure she has some toys and offer her some playtime. If she doesn't want to play, just leave her alone for the time being. A bed or spot for her to lay near a window would probably be great. Our cats love basking in the sun, and looking out at the birds and rabbits, etc. It will take time, but cats are really smart and as long as they have their own space to go to when they want to be left alone, they will be fine.

If he is up and about, our male cat does almost all the time. He will play fetch too. He sleeps on my wife's pillow so when she says, "Bubba its time to go to bed," he prances right in there and lays down. He also needs to get a pill everyday due to an intestinal disease and he come running and jumps right up onto the counter when we shake his pill bottle.

Cats are a lot smarter and more interactive than they're given credit for. Ours is very affectionate and playful. She plays fetch with a ball that's got feathers. She almost demands to play with Cat Distractor 3000 (our name for a laser pointer). When you shake the keychain it's on she goes nuts looking for her red dot to chase. Shaking other keys does not illicit the same response.

DON'T EVER DECLAW YOUR CATS.

Even if they are indoor cats they will get outside somehow, and they will need to defend themselves.

Plus it's cruel, and your med school drop out veterinarian will prolly cut too deep into the tendon leaving the cat with pain the rest of their life.

All it takes is time to train a cat how to use a scratch post. In fact, get a few of them so they have options in multiple rooms.

Most likely you are petting her somewhere there is nerve damage or pain.

There is also a difference between play biting and aggressive biting.

Yes, I think a lot of people (including myself at times) probably incorrectly associate being "social" with being intelligent. I view dogs as very smart because they are so responsive and trainable, but that's not necessarily a sign of intelligence... it is more a sign of obedience. They are pack animals and love the social interaction so they are much easier to train and are known for their training.

I'm sure as far as intelligence goes, it's a toss-up between cats and dogs, and it probably depends largely on what type of intelligence we are talking about.

Okay,I got a cat so that it I go someplace overnight i will not have to worry. Would rather of gotten a dog. She is 2 years old. Shelter had her fixed. I live in an older building so there is ton
Of space for her to sun herself. She sleeps with me. I did not change her name because of her age,she comes when called. Her biting is mostly playful or trying to established st dominance.
Got a ton of toys two scratching posts. I give her the run of the place.

My cat allergies rule out ever having one. I'm one of the most passive, least sympathetic people on pets / animals, but have to agree on the de-clawing....it's cruel. Scratch post and trimming i've heard from many will do it.

Even besides the cruelty of it....If you are that paranoid / materialistic about your furniture getting scratched up, you don't deserve the love of a pet.
