I’ve learned something in this thread, that Kroger’s owns Mariano’s. For consistency sake across the company, I have stumbled into Kroger’s several times on Sunday’s in the midst of an extreme banana shortage. But I persisted.

Man, you got that right. How does Marianos have the hottest barely legal chicks behind the registers but Meijer and Wal-Mart hire mostly residents from The Hills have Eyes.

I completely agree with this, but it's not limited to Mariano's. They ALL do this.
This.

Every store should have one lane where all alcohol purchases need to be made, and thus the cashier is at least 21 years old. If you have just a bottle of wine, that is where you go. If you have a cart full of items with a case of beer, you still go there. Seems simple enough. This should be the case everywhere, but especially on weekends.

so if you have just a bottle of wine you want to stand behind someone with a cart full of groceries ?

I scan the lanes looking for the 50 year old looking woman operating a register. Irritates me when there are none and they just have a manager on call. You’d think going during school hours would help... nope.

Yeah, I'm not seeing the logic here...although, the Jewels by my house has dedicated liquor checkouts. The Mariano's by me is usually pretty quick with the booze...but they seem to always have an "of age" checker on the line closest to the liquor department. Honestly, though, I tend to go to an actual liquor store to buy booze unless I'm in a hurry.

Talk about swiftly going down the shitter. If I need something quick it's great to have a grocery store 10 minute walk away. But Mariano's no longer gets basics right let alone the fancy shit for Chad and Becky. Their produce is dog shit. The quality blows and the selection is limited. Instead of small bundles of cilantro for 50 cents like everyone else in this damn city they're pawning off bundles that'll last a month for .89. Motherfuckers, no one needs that much cilantro. There were like 6 bundles of bananas on Sunday at 3pm. I get it...Sunday...busy shopping day. So be prepared with proper inventory levels assholes! The selection and pricing for ethnic packaged goods sucks shit too. Great if you need quinoa crackers and artisinal goat cheese. Bad if you need chipotle peppers in adobo sauce.

Oh but they're always on point with their bar. Always stocked with 4 taps, liquor, frozen margs and daquiris, rose, prosseco, etc etc etc. Piano player fooling all the shoppers into thinking they're classy assholes because they shop to live jazz piano.

Screw Mariano's/Kroger

Dry the cilantro out, crush it, and put it in an old minced onion shaker or similar recycled wide-opening plastic spice container - and you will have Cilantro-On-Demand!

I do this with the wild green onions that grow in a patch in my garden, and I use the crap out of it as a flavoring for everything.

Friday night...head to Mariano's for a night cap. As mentioned earlier, $2 drafts for all of March.

1. Guy gets kicked out of the bar b/c the bartender was cleaning up and missing for 5 minutes. So guy goes behind the bar and was about to pour himself a beer when bartender freaks out. Good on her.

2. Drunk guy #2 cutoff/runs off for being overserved. Informs the bartender the green drink he's sipping out of champagne flute was bought before she started her shift. She smiled and asked him to let her know if he'd like another after he's done with the drink. The guy took 2 sips, gave up, and ran off in shame. Bartender informs the other patrons that was the display drink poured in the afternoon composed of water, green food coloring and orange juice.

Just another night at the Mariano's Ravenswood bar.

This definitely applies to the Meijer off of Golf and Algonquin.

This sounds like the place to be. Let's make a night of it.

Mariano's has gone downhill under the auspices of Kroger. It was better as dressed-up Pick 'n' Save. Wisconsin knows food.

I'm eating a Mariano's apple fritter as I read this thread. My dad had never been in the one near his place (one of the built from scratch ones) so we walked through it today as I needed a Starbucks and a McDonald's gift card for my breakfast options. He was suitably impressed by the circus, although he didn't buy any food today. It's better than the Jewel he uses when he needs 2-3 things.

I get effectively a 3% gas discount when I buy gift cards there. $50 of gift cards is 10 cents per gallon and i usually get 15-16 gallons. Their fritters are good, not nearly Old Fashioned Donuts but they're also 99 cents and I don't have to drive to 115th and Michigan to get one. I buy some fruit and some lettuce sometimes, but that's about it.

Some weeknight I'll stop in and have them cook me a strip steak and take it over to my dad's place and split it with him, just for the novelty.

Also, he can get that soup's ingredients shipped right to his front door from Blue Apron for only $97.
