At least 2/3rds of them are terrible, including Illinois. They should open a contest with the high school kids and have them design a new flag... give the top three finishers scholarships to in-state schools or something. Here are some suggestions:
  • No using the state seal at all -- they are too detailed to be seen at a distance and flags are designed to be viewed from a distance
  • Don't write the name of your state on it (California Republic gets an exception here) -- I should be able to tell the state just from looking at the flag
  • Less is More
  • Keep it rectangular (I'm looking at you, Ohio)

Some good flags -- see if you know these states:

Some bad flags -- see if you know these (BTW, I had to remove a bunch that have the name of the state spelled out in the damn flag):

Arizona, Colorado, Texas, easy.

But it's probably a good thing that most state flags aren't that memorable. You don't want that imagery to be too powerful or else people might start getting all stirred up over Mississippi and South Carolina, and where do we go from there.

Oddly enough, we have a good handful of iconic city flags: the blue and orange tricolor of New York (Mets/Knicks/Isles colors), Chicago, New Orleans, St. Louis, DC, hopefully Milwaukee soon.

The St Louis city flag is trash and does not even belong in the same sentence as the Chicago flag.

I always though the Palmetto and crescent moon on a blue field was striking and fairly simple. Mind you, the only reason I know it is because I had to do a report on the state in 83 for a school project. Not sure I’d have reason to know it otherwise.

It is very fitting for that state. Much the same as the Big Dipper for Alaska, and the Grizzly Bear for California.

Can't ours be mitten-shaped? That's how everyone shows where they live in Michigan, anyway- I live right here...

(Full disclosure, I'm not worried about offending the yoopers, there's only a couple thousand of 'em, and they're too busy hunting or fucking or dealing cards to notice, anyways...)

Michigan's flag should be a caricature of Tim Allen's face.

Should trade the western U.P. to Wisconsin for Toledo (who already seem to think they live in Michigan anyhow) and the eastern U.P. to Kanaydia for Windsor.

No interest in turtles unless they are fannie may turtles. And those aren't as good as they used to be.

Why would Ohio trade Toledo when WI is getting the land?

Three-way trade: Michigan gets Toledo from Ohio, Wisconsin gets UP from Michigan, Ohio gets busloads of Fark-story subjects and the rights to the Foxconn plant from Wisconsin
