At least 2/3rds of them are terrible, including Illinois. They should open a contest with the high school kids and have them design a new flag... give the top three finishers scholarships to in-state schools or something. Here are some suggestions:
- No using the state seal at all -- they are too detailed to be seen at a distance and flags are designed to be viewed from a distance
- Don't write the name of your state on it (California Republic gets an exception here) -- I should be able to tell the state just from looking at the flag
- Less is More
- Keep it rectangular (I'm looking at you, Ohio)
Some good flags -- see if you know these states:
I dig Ohio's uniqueness. Also Maryland's is so out there that I'm a
bigfan as well.
An under-the-radar flag is New Mexico's. But that's because Americans forget New Mexico exists.
Two flags that should be tied for last are Mississippi and Hawaii. Putting symbolism aside, those are still ugly ass flags.
