A strike nearly killed the sport but if all the players died the sport would be fine. Sounds reasonable

Yup. They don't need to get better, everyone else just needs to get worse. Meteor solves that.

Screwing over players on service time worked out for both sides. The Sox keep a top prospect for an extra year and the top prospect is not killed by a meteor.

Probably not. If a meteor killed every MLB player right now and the league had to start over from scratch, it would likely not be in a great spot three years from now.

People pretty much root for laundry. The NBA perhaps an exception to a certin degree.

Of course, but I think you and others are underestimating the degree to which the quality of the sport would suffer if you just took the best 750 or so players in the world out of the game. I'm fairly confident it would not be the same league with the same rating and popularity three years later. 20-30 years maybe.
