The Red Sox response almost makes it sound like they think James was saying no one would notice if only the Red Sox players were replaced.

I think what he said is absolutely true except I’d stretch it to 5 years.

The world would cheer if the meteor took all Boston fans too.

I thought I double posted it & deleted what I thought was the second one.

But Bill James ought to go back to his night shift guarding a bean cannery in Kansas. And take Billy Beane & "baseball consultants"with him.

Probably not. If a meteor killed every MLB player right now and the league had to start over from scratch, it would likely not be in a great spot three years from now.

People pretty much root for laundry. The NBA perhaps an exception to a certin degree.

Of course, but I think you and others are underestimating the degree to which the quality of the sport would suffer if you just took the best 750 or so players in the world out of the game. I'm fairly confident it would not be the same league with the same rating and popularity three years later. 20-30 years maybe.

Yeah the 3 year thing was goofy. I don't think it'd take 20 years. Maybe 7-10.

I think you wouldn't even notice in 3 years.

I'll tell you what I do notice. When Bob Shaw and Stacey Eaton are working a Pearl Jam show at Wrigley and I have to buy warm beer from some slowpoke vendor.

Attempted Doxxing of beer vendors now? How low will you stoop?!

Poor Bill is getting slammed by players all over the place. Baseball players are pretty thin skinned.

I guess Poor Bill is getting an education on another of baseball's unwritten rules.

The Red Sox issued the following statement.

Would the game not go on?

Isnt he technically correct?

He's wrong about the beer vendors though. Just try to grab a cold one at Sox Park when the Cubs are home at the same time.

Of course it's true. People cant handle the truth.

Yea, more information about the sport is definitely a bad thing.

No difference to the sport three years after every MLB player vanishes Leftovers style? BATSHIT crazy Imo.

I don't hate Bill James.

I hate people that treat what he says as law simply because he came up with some arbitrary formula to grade a player on a given day. He's a smart guy, but he isn't exempt from criticism. The OP is all you need to see. His basic premise is correct, but the way he worded it is terrible and completely wrong and deserves to be laughed at.

People adapt quicker than many are giving them credit for.

Sure, people would miss Mike Trout, but there'd be a new Mike Trout (best player in the game). How long would it take until baseball was back? 5 years? 10?

But for some reason, I read your post like you were talking about some other opinions he's had.

Agreed.

Probably. Certainly longer than the batshit crazy opinion of three years.

Im glad you don't hate him. For a baseball fan such as yourself, he's great.

Game score is a tiny part of what Bill James has done. You are way overselling that aspect of his work.

I dont know man. I love baseball. I dont think I would allow myself to mourn longer than a year.

Fuck? Year 3...the White Sox have a 5 game lead in September and you are crying for Daniel Palka?

It's not about mourning. James said there would be "no difference" in three years. Hell, the game and players might even be better, but there would absolutely be a giant difference three years down the road.
