100th Anniversary of the Armistice this Sunday.

Anyone else remember these vets? I remember these guys when I was really little. They were pretty old--like my grandpa--but they had guts. My grandpa also was in the US Border War, in which the US entered Mexican territory (they just up and did it) in order to chase Pancho Villa around. Right after that, he went to France to fight The Hun. I quit drinking 25 years ago, but I think I'll have a shot of Bushmill for my grandpa. (I'll buy someone here a shot; that would kill me.)

Two kids across the street also had bad-ass grandfathers who fought in WWI. If I am not mistaken, both of them (one Irish, one Polish) were in the US for a few weeks before getting drafted and shipped back to Europe.

WWI also motivated the greatest logo in sports: the 1917 Chicago White Sox. (Forget about them there pants; I'm talking about the logo, baby.)

Had a great uncle who served in France as well. He had all kinds of pictures & stuff in his apartment. It was like walking into a time capsule, especially since he was actually named Winfield Scott.

Oddly, my mother recently came across some discharge papers & widows/orphans claims for HIS grandfather from the Civil War who had the peculiar first name of Agrippa.

Aside from the trousers being a tad baggy, those uniforms are awesome.

My grandfather fought in Europe druing WWII and received one or two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. I didn't personally meet any relatives who fought in WWI but I would image there was one.

I love how people used to wear suits and dresses to go to baseball games. Must have been hot as balls in the summer, though. People got more dressed up then for a baseball game than they do now for dinner at a nice restaurant or church.

Let's not get Jorr riled up with a dress code discussion.

Too bad America is banned. Would have liked to have heard his stories about being at Verdun on the 100th anniversary of the end of the war.

Yeah, we had a different notion of being in public back then. It's like when you see men waiting in line during the Depression for a meal, and they all wear suits and ties.....

Great uncle was in it. He got back alive and the next summer drowned pulling one of his younger siblings out of a river. Beyond that direct ancestors were either too old or too young. I met some when I was very young but I’m not sure I understood what people were talking about ask was probably 8 years old or something.

Have to settle for WW2 and nam stories for personalized stories or civil war for way back stories.

My relative where in it, but on the German side. Family on both sides did not emigrate till after WW!. My great Gram until her death would not believe the stories about the Third Reich,she said no decent German would have put up with that type of brutality

Slave names were kind of wild in some families. And the practice kind of stuck for families for awhile. In addition to Winfield & Agrippa, we've also had a King Arthur , several Moses, a Black Sambo (the white family actually had a white son named Sambo on the census records ) and some really other odd names.

Well....some of my great uncles fought in WWI and WWII.....just not on the winning side....

I still see some Moseses among older folks--my son's bus driver a few years back, for example. But names are unbelievably interesting, to say the least. That King Arthur cracks me up. The Sambos haven't aged well....I wonder if there is a book on slave names? Or a chapter? be interesting to read more or hear more about this.

Just finished a Dan Carlin deep dive into WWI. The shit those guys went through was unbelievable. You basically lived in a muddy trench and if you managed to survive disease, gas attacks, constant artillery bombardment, and snipers, it was only a matter of time before you were cut down by machine gun fire while attempting to break the stalemate. If you refused to go on the assault your own officers would shoot you. Regardless, most went bravely to their deaths when it was their turn. All war is tragic, but WWI seemed even more so.

I been reading a lot about not only the war but the lead up and the ending of it. I do not know who was more fucked up the people who started it or those who imposed the "peace" on it.

His kids actually helped found an HBCU in Mississippi. Certainly knew the history of the name. My great grandmother made sure I respected it.
