Glad the American public could foot the bill for your charity while you were getting your bags packed to essentially ship all manufacturing overseas.

New title for the amazing, but possibly lost in the annals of time, CSFMB GM IPO thread:

American Taxpayer Foots Bill for GM's Move Overseas

Seconded, what garbage. This even screws over Ontario taxpayers, too; Oshawa has been a GM town about as long as there's been a GM.

Let me guess. You didn't buy an American car since the bailouts and yet you wonder why they have to do things like this to survive?

They should have stuck it out like Sears...that’s how a patriotic CEO runs a business.

I don't buy inferior products and inferior companies should not be propped up by governments. This isn't the USSR.

They make many quality cars. How many did you test drive when shopping the last time?

It is ok to prefer foreign car companies but don't be shocked when American car companies have to move jobs overseas because of people who think like you and won't consider them.

Are you suggesting that tariffs that have been in place for a few months were the impetus behind closing these plants?

I am suggesting that Trump can use tariffs to “save” the American auto industry the same way he “saved” steel.

The new Malibu is almost always my first choice when I pick a rental at the airport. Nice ride, quick and seems well built.

I heard a panel on NPR yesterday that included a former engineering bigwig from GM. The consensus was that GM gambled on high gas prices and put their money on mid-size cars that Americans just didn't want. Americans buy SUVs and if they're going to go economy they are buying electric because it makes them feel as if they are really doing something. There was also a lot of lamenting over the abandonment of the Saturn model. The GM guy said it was unfair to blame Mary Barra as she had to play the hand she was dealt.

Not sure if most remember or not I bought the 18 Traverse LT AWD. Love it. The ratings on many Chevy products speak for themselves.

Okay. I knew an unbiased observer like yourself wasn't suggesting that tariffs that had just been put in place caused the plant closings.

That seems like old news to me. Anyway, I am not defending bailouts, layoffs, closures or anything else. I just like my vehicle.

Well, part of the conversation was about how these massive plants were dedicated to single vehicles and set up in a way where they are not nimble enough to cost-effectively turn on a dime and build a new product. But I was under the impression that one of GM's primary reasons for wanting to kill Saturn was precisely that it didn't use standard GM parts. Anyway, the engineer was suggesting a move away from assembly line production. Of course, automation was also part of the discussion.

I am interested to see in 10 years how the decision to basically not make passenger cars anymore will look.

Both Ford and GM are making a huge mistake in this regard (Ford especially). They are ceding a huge portion of the market to competitors. But these two companies have proven that they can't build desirable, profitable models relative to Honda and Toyota, so in the short term it looks smart.

We were a GMC/Pontiac family. But they tanked Pontiac, and I was forced to go elsewhere car wise. We decided to go a bit upmarket!

I still look around at what's on the road. And if it's a non-luxury brand car, it is usually a Honda, Toyota or some Korean model.
