all alabama has to do is stop Oklahoma a couple of times and they win that game. Alabama might not punt or attempt a field goal that day.

 Probably true. As much as I hate on Oklahoma, though, they nearly beat Georgia last year. So I am conflicted and don't know what to expect. But I can't see Alabama giving them the kinds of big plays they've been getting all year. They're too damn quick and fast on defense. Kyler Murray better be awful elusive....

Wanny had a theory that ND getting in will blow up the whole system and people are going to scream for 8 teams and no more conference championship games. It is sort of bullshit they sat home resting while other teams risked everything in the championship games.

Not sure if you meant that they didn't play well or didn't have a hard schedule, but if it was the latter, Clemson and OU could say the same thing.

It's the conferences' own greed that caused the championship games, anyway. Maybe when they start scheduling USC and Michigan (or replacing Michigan with OSU or Wisconsin, as ND will in the next few years) every year, they can complain. Alabama had a tough non-conference foe this year in Louisville (who ND actually plays next year).

Oh-I was being sarcastic about Alabama. L-ville may have been good when Alabama scheduled them, though.

ND just needs to stop with the shenanigans.

I feel like if they blow out or get blown out by Clemson there is still going to be complaints about them qualifying for the playoffs with only 12 games played.

Remember when there were a lot of independents? Penn State, BC, FSU, Perot Tech, Pitt....

ND is really the only one I remember from the time I started playing NCAA football on the early PlayStation consoles.

Either way, what is their argument for not moving to a conference?

The simple solution for that is to REQUIRE you win your conference championship game to get into the 4 team playoff. Otherwise, ND deserved to be in.

I don't think anyone even really got screwed this year. OSU was up and down all year. Georgia has 2 losses. Michigan had 2 losses. That only leaves UCF, but come on. Do we really think they are better than any of the top 4 on a neutral field? I guess they could score with Oklahoma but so could 50 or so teams in the NCAA. I'm not sure they would be better than 8 teams and be deserving of a spot in the top 8 especially without their quarterback.

Now, it sucks to be in a lower division of college football, and if I was a UCF fan I would be sad I wasn't getting a chance to be in the CFP but the Power 5 schools are more than twice the size of the NFL. UCF might as well be playing in a different division over what most of those teams are playing. To put it another way, I would guess that a majority of the top 25 would be undefeated with the schedule they played.

So, are we going to have an 8 team playoff so UCF can go undefeated against subpar competition and have a chance to play Alabama on the road and probably lose by 14+ points? I guess we could.

Hey Kirk Herbstreit. Thanks for posting on CFMB.

The answer to your question is yes.

I liked when UCF had a chance to get blown out by the team that beat Alabama last year. Oh wait, Auburn simply wasn't trying as hard in that game because they were devastated about not making the playoff or whatever rubbish is usually pushed to excuse SEC bowl losses.

Last year means nothing now.

The same logic that was used to justify leaving them out last year is being used now.

Chaining head to head wins is one of the worst arguments to make in college football. Would you also say that Eastern Michigan is better than Ohio State because EMU beat Purdue who then beat OSU?

UCF is a quality team. I won't downplay their win against Auburn last year but we can't take that into account for this years team any more than we can take into account OSU winning impressively in the best non-CFB bowl game from last year either.

Similar to the Sooners, though they actually lost one.

(I don't actually believe that, but just sayin' that if OU played in the SEC, they'd have two losses.)

I didn't make any kind of transitive property claim at all though. My point was that if your logic for keeping them out last year was the exact same as this year, despite their surpassing expectations when matched against a top 10 P5 team last year, then perhaps that logic needs updating.

One reference to last year though that is justified IMO is the overall length of their current winning streak. Given how few teams have managed a similarly lengthy streak in the last 20 years, it seems to me that projecting a "majority of the top 25" to be able to repeat that feat seems a bit unfounded.

I haven't heard a good proposal for it that doesn't cause the same number of problems if not more.

Even now it is like "Cancel all the conference title games, give it to the conference winners of the Power 5, and then have home games for the top 4 ranked teams".

So, let's discuss this scenario.
Conference winners:
Alabama
Clemson
Oklahoma
Washington
OSU
At large:
Georgia
Notre Dame

So, now we have 1 spot left.
Is it UCF or Michigan? Michigan has 2 losses to teams already in the playoffs.

There's always going to be debate about teams being left out.

I just want more teams. More entertainment. More college football in a playoff setting.

That doesn't make any sense though. OSU had an impressive win last year in a non-CFP bowl game too. It doesn't change how they should be viewed this year either. It's a new season.

Why? Ge ahead and rank the big wins by UCF this year and tell me you don't think it would be reasonable that a majority of the top 25 would be capable of those same results.

I was sorta with Parkin's plan for 8 teams with no conference championship games with the first round on the Saturday the conference championships were on and the last 2 rounds when they're scheduled now. The question would be if the Elite 8 games would make more $ than the conference championship games. If you're doing it early you could also throw the first round losers back into the regular Bowl pool.

As I pointed out, the P5 conferences combined are double the size of the NFL. I mean, there comes a point where you can't have everyone be equal.
