Doug commented in the craft brew thread with a Hamm's pic and along with the recent noise about PBR maybe going away got me thinking about old school beer.

What beers would you like to try still that were your dad's brand or maybe just the cheap shit you got when young? Something from an old beer can collection?

Me not too sure would probably sample a Hamm's, Schlitz etc. Had some Old Style around Thanksgiving which wasn't horrible. There are a lot of odd old brands in PA here I have no idea what would be good.

I had Hamm's on tap at Elk Grove Bowl on Saturday. It was fine.

I’ve had old style in last couple of years. I’ve had worse. Growing up my folks were mostly wine or gin and tonic drinkers but they usually had either Old Style, Miller lite or genuine draft in the house. Miller lite gives me a headache and was never a MGD fan. They would also have Löwenbräu but I’m thinking they ditched that after deciding it wasn’t same as when they lived in Germany. When we’d go to Wisconsin my dad woukd tend to get Point Beer and was a Hamm’s fan on occasion as well.

And of course, Iron City when we visited the Colonel in Pittsburgh area.

My dad was a Hamm's, Old Milwaukee, PBR guy. PBR was the only one I could stomach.

Then hipsters like Bagels ruined it.

I'd love to get my hands on some Black Label again. I don't think they make it anymore but that was a solid working man's beer. PBR is fine. I can't stomach old style.

Gill's (Never Goes Flat), a legendary Hyde Park (47th street) brewery that bottled their strangely potent beer in 2-liter jugs and was notorious for selling/delivering to underage drinkers. An amazing, crazy place. Would love to try some of their stuff now.

Started buying there regularly at 16. Bringing in an old bottle to exchange for a filled one made an id completely unnecessary. RIP Gills. Binnys now sits on their old site.

As long as it was good and cold, it was great. Which encouraged underaged kids to power drink in really short time frames.

I have found that to be the case with a lot of the beers from back in the day. Get the thing damn near frozen and it’s pretty good.

for the hell of it one saturday I spontaneously bought a sixer of Schlitz for old times sake (my dad used to drink it back in the old days) and I did not care at all for this latest resurrection. I have never had a problem with Old Milwaukee, it isn't anything special but it is a decent cheap beer to guzzle down while mowing the lawn or doing yard work. Its cold and refreshing. Most of the time I just drink Busch Light, $2 pints at my local watering hole and it is fine. I enjoy Casper White Stout on occasion when my wife and I go out with friends but I am definitely not in the craft beer crowd.

Yeah, that's right, it really tasted awful when it got a little warm.

Kinda like the drinks at Cyril's ( ), though, Gill's beer really packed a punch.

My grandfather was a Schlitz man. Because of nostalgia, I got one at Vito and Nick 's awhile back. Haven't had the feeling since.

I got arrested in Jackson Park with about 1 ounce left in my gallon jug of Gill's. One of the cops was a roided up jerkoff named Patterson. Years later I read an article where he got busted for some malfeasance. That was a good day.

They got me once as well. Made me pour out almost an entire fresh gallon. The guy at Gill's laughed when I was too quickly back for a new one.

Not long ago I actually had a High Life light as opposed to a miller lite. Seems odd to make another brew.

That was what my grandpa's go-to...came home with a 6 pack after work every day. Switched to Busch Light when the raised the price of the 6-er to like 2 bucks.

He loved his Old Style, too...but that was for fancy occasions.

We are talking aboot highly inferior macro brew (HIMB) products. beni considers himself an expert. The best of the HIMBs is PBR, especially when a 30 pack is on sale. Hamms and High Life are more than acceptable replacement HIMBs when the price of a 30 pack is right. Don't give up on Busch by cracky either. Top notch metallic flavor when chilled as DSquirrel recommends.

And screw you Furious for letting hipsters dictate your choice of beverage.

Hamms in the keg cans would be fun.
