Goldschmidt is a great hitter and a great fielder. An outstanding move by the Cardinals to get such a player in his prime. That said, it will be interesting to see if his numbers slide a little. Playing in Arizona likely resulted in him hitting a few more homers each year, but I'm not suggesting he won't still be an excellent player in St. Louis. The NL Central is going to be one hell of a division.

Most home runs in a single season, American League. But it'll be tough to break that record with St. Louis.

Goldschmidt made the last 3 years combined what Jason Heyward makes in 1 year. Mr underpaid & Mr overpaid. Goldschmidt is signed only through 2019. He'll be 32 when his team friendly contract expires. Even, in off years for him, he puts up some nice numbers. Maybe they'll get a postseason peptalk out of him too?

Power hitting first baseman are a dime a dozen. Goldschmidt is a great player, but this is not some put you over the top move.

What about Rizzo?

Goes for him, too.

This isnt a Cub thing, Ive long held the belief that getting a big power hitting first baseman is nice, but nothing special because literally every team has one.

It's just not as valuable as a power hitting SS, CF, Catcher, 3B

Highly unlikely after another year tacked on the Cub starting pitchers.

Cubs get worse when the teams in their division actually try

Of course it doesnt hurt. He's a great player.

But the Cardinal 1b from last year had the same number of RBI's and a higher batting average (if you're old school)

If you're not old school, the Cards 1b had an .821 OPS

Why? MANY of the same pitchers are still on those teams that he's had past success against.

So these guys are a dime a dozen, and first base defense doesn't matter....

Unless its comparing Rizzo to Abreu. Then defense matters, and guys like Rizzo become much more rare.

He's been in the league since 2011. Half the time the Cubs and Brewers sucked. Plus both teams definitely did not have the same pitchers throughout those 7 years. 7 years...43 games against the Cubs and 46 games against the Brewers....

Useless stat.

So managers are just wasting their time when they look at past success against teams in deciding who to play, setting their lineup, positioning their defense, deciding on bullpen matchups, etc.? I doubt that he has sucked against the Cubs and Brewers the past couple years.

It's up for debate. Many people say Batter vs pitcher stats are non sense and not predictive of anything. I guess that's what the numbers say. Personally, I think there is some intangible stuff there that DOES matter.

Good thing he played almost as many games at 3B then and some at 2B.

-2.1 dWAR and now he's going to play more difficult positions more often? Not sure how that will work out.

Look, its a nice move for the Cardinals, but what Im saying can't be refuted. Every single team in baseball has a player capable of playing first base and hitting 20-25 homers.

He would just be much more valuable if he played a different position. And yes, you can certainly apply that to Rizzo, too.

Also, Martinez is on the block. Good chance he'll be traded.

Yeah, it's not like he's going to the bench. If you want to argue it will hurt them defensively moving him to third base that has some merit. (Edit: I see you did) But to brush of this trade as no big deal because Goldschmidts are a dime a dozen is just a bad sports thought.

Never said that.

Is this really that hard to comprehend? Power hitting first baseman (i.e. a guy who will hit 20-25 homers) are extremely common.

Goldschmidt is great and it makes them better, but it's just not as significant as adding a great hitter at a position like SS, 3B, 2B, CF, or Catcher.

It's why Machado is such a big deal and more valuable than Harper (RF another position full of power hitters...not as much as 1B though)

Yes.

Look at history against a specific pitcher. But against a team? Dumb.
