Is this really that hard to comprehend? Power hitting first baseman (i.e. a guy who will hit 20-25 homers) are extremely common.

Goldschmidt is great and it makes them better, but it's just not as significant as adding a great hitter at a position like SS, 3B, 2B, CF, or Catcher.

It's why Machado is such a big deal and more valuable than Harper (RF another position full of power hitters...not as much as 1B though)

If you are talking in baseball generalities you are correct. The Cardinals have been mediocre the past couple years largely due to the lack of a thumper in the middle of their line-up. They have that now, regardless of position.

Look at history against a specific pitcher. But against a team? Dumb.

Against Cubs pitchers "[i]n 43 career games...Goldschmidt is hitting .353 with 14 home runs, 39 RBIs, a .471 on-base percentage and a 1.170 OPS." I think that matters, you don't. That's fine.

Well, then I guess a lot of baseball writers are too.

In 99 plate appearances against the 2017 Cubs pitching staff he has a .950 OPS, including a career 1.321 OPS against Jon Lester, 1.931 against Jose Quintana, 1.556 against Marrow, 1.229 against Montgomery, 1.000 against Strop. I assume they will be pitching for the Cubs next year?
