 Post subject: Stand-up Comedy Sucks
PostPosted: Thu Dec 06, 2018 12:53 pm
It always has sucked.
It always will suck.

The exceptions to this are very few and far between. Do not @ me defending this wannabe edgy garbage where some drunk loser gets on stage pandering to a similarly drunk but slightly more successful audience.

This just means you've never been to a place where you can see it done well.

It's only really good live outside of a few super talented people.

I worked at an improv club in Chicago that regularly hosted stand-up comedians. I was in the room the whole show. Seldom was it really that funny (though as a youth I admit I found it way funnier than I do now).

So maybe try a comedy club that gets better acts?

That's because they ply you with drinks for hours. They you are put in a room with a bunch of people who are drunk and ready to laugh at almost anything. Group think gets the laughter going.

The same can be said for musicians, artists and for most of those in all other creative pursuits. And most sports and athletes by this logic

Ok. I guess it actually sucks then.

Music is objectively better to listen to than a glorified monologue about basically nothing.

Clearly you have never been to a Pi Theory or a Hazardous Youth show.

Most comedy clubs that I've been to had drink minimums, and a time you had to sit in the room before the acts started. Then you have warm-ups acts that go on for a few hours before the main event.

All have two drink minimums. I never went to one where the whole show was more than an hour.

I am not saying there are not very good acts, but to me most of the clubs are like watching minor league baseball. There are some of the absolute masters who have NetFlix and HBO specials then there are all of the rest. And of the NetFlix and HBO specials I would say maybe the top third are really funny throughout.

Listening to Gabriel Iglesias talk about how much he loved a sandwich because he's fat is... well let's just say lowest common denominator. You tell better jokes here.

I wonder if these "masters" started their careers with small club shows where they weren't very good at first. And then, stay with me here, they kept practicing by doing more shows to improve their acts.

Typical format for me was 30-45 minute wait time after doors open.

Opening act 15-20 minutes, and then a break (for drinks) 15-20 minutes.

1 or 2 midrange acts with a break in-between if there are two.

20-45 minute wait, and then the headliner.

So you are there for about 2 hours before the main show. Usually in by 7:30-8 out by 10:30-11.

Enjoy a lot of Schaumburg Boomers baseball do you? Do you have to be so angry all the time btw?

America has no shortage of talentless dreamers spending mom & dads money to totally devote their 20's to something they will just never be good at even slightly.

Heres an idea to all stand-up wannabes out there:

The thread is essentially saying I went to a Boomers game and I conclude baseball sucks.

Actually get to know a topic people are interested in and have informed thoughts/opinions on that while being funny at the same time. Its much more compelling to listen to than some lush blathering on about mundane observations from daily life or angsty political opinions.

It seems like every speak-truth-to-power journalist at Gawker, Vice, HuffPo, and Buzzfeed also does open mics that are like "sooooooo...I'm Jewish? and....Twitter? Like, what's with it?"

There is a ton of bad product out there, and it has proliferated so that many unqualified people are doing "stand-up comedy". Terry Boers did a set at a fund raiser. As CH has pointed out many bloggers branch out into "stand-up". And at every office holiday party I've been to for years there has been stand-up or improv from some hidden gem in accounting. I have yet to see baseball demonstration.

It's an analogy that you took too literally.

That's horrible. The ones in NYC sometimes were only 30 minutes. They are one of the things I miss the most.

It's good if you have a sense of humor.

If you're a consistently angry person who is mad at the world in general, it's probably not for you.

I really love live stand up. I cannot think of a time where I didn't laugh, even at the first act. I've never really liked stand up comedy specials on TV.

I've been watching improv of the last couple of months for obvious reasons. I've never really thought that form of art is funny in the same way as stand up. However, it is entertaining to watch people create. It's just not huge laughs type of funny.

I got a free ticket to Conan last week. I didn't think he was all that great at stand up. He had young comedians with him who were hit and miss. I've seen regular shows at Zanies that were funnier than his group. Still, they were funny. There was only one, painfully unfunny Borat thief named Flula Borg. Now that guy sucked

If the movie 'The Purge' ever became real life, I bet this fucking annoying ball of stanky armpit and leg hair would be in big trouble.
