Love the movie but this scene always sort of bothered me. Why did “hot” and vivacious Mary become a meek spinster just because George wasn’t born? Not to mention the stereotyping of librarians.

it's the age-old joke that if you put glasses on a woman it makes her dull and unattractive. and librarians were basically nuns. but yeah it was definitely a stereotype.

One thing that is not on the list is when a drunken Uncle Billy "falls" off camera after leaving the Bailey house and yells "I'm all right. I'm allllright!", he didn't really fall. A stagehand knocked something over, he ad-lilbbed the line, and they kept it in the movie. I love Stewart's little smile when that happens, too.

George Bailey made her a whore.

He really was a piece of shit who took a bailout when his business failed.

I didn't think it was specifically against Italians. I seem to recall some reference in british literature about the lower class eating garlic.

If it was specifically directed at the Martini's, that was just overkill. We got the point when they brought their swarm of swarthy kids and a goat to their new home in Bailey Park.

WGN had a radio play version on earlier. Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed played their movie roles. It cut out much of the film, but it was still worth listening to.

I find myself wishing this was only on Channel 11 at 10 pm on Christmas Eve.
