They seem to be adding legitimate big league players which is good, but this move is somewhat curious. If Polecat is right and this guy just replaces Davidson, is he honestly that much of an upgrade? He has a career .745 OPS.

Hopefully Hahn has learned viewing Theo's blunders, and is wiser.

I am baffled by the way the Sox have treated the catcher situation. Two years ago things seemed dire at the position with them bringing up two non prospects in smith and narvaez. Well both of them ended up producing and really earning a spot on the roster. What does Hahn do? He signs some overpriced juicer and sends smith down. When that bum ends up getting suspended smith produces again. Meanwhile narvaez develops into one of the best offensive catchers in the league. They are sitting pretty at the position for a team on a limited budget with two catchers cost controlled for four seasons. What does Hahn do? Let smith walk for nothing and trade away narvaez for an arm equal to what they could have found for the same amount of money in fr e agency

Now we sit here with 10 million invested into the position for next year instead of the league minimum and not demonstrably better for it. That is some bad general managing

I’ll say this, if Hahn does not get his man in Machado or Harper he should be fired. This has been an incomprehensible off season otherwise. What does Alonso bring you at a greater cost than you already had sitting there on the team. I don’t want to go back to the era of signing over the hill mediocre veterans who do not fill a need.

He’s a good fielding 1B. That will allow Abreu to move to DH. They’re obviously hoping he’s more the ‘17 version than the ‘18 version.

So are they putting Palka in the outfield? This move kind of kills his at bats as a DH.

Yeah it seems this move either means the end of Abreu or Palka with the Sox.

He has gotten on base at an outstanding rate two years in a row. That is no mirage. He added some power in year two. I think the numbers say he was the 4th best offensive catcher in baseball last year

He's the absolute worst catcher in all of baseball. By the eye test and by the numbers (that's hard to do) and he doesn't hit nearly enough to be a 1B/DH. He doesn't have a position.

White Sox pitching staff is one of the worst in baseball. Can the young starters improve over their 5+ era? Nova slight if any upgrade over "Big Game" James Shields. This rebuild is going to be a much longer process than Cubs was.

Nah, he's probably a top 5 catcher. Can't hit a lick but would have made a nice combo with Narvaez.

There is a thing called defense and throwing runners out. Hitting singles doesn't make you a good catcher.

Yes. He throws out runners at a 37% clip and fangraphs has him 2nd in MLB defensively behind Contreras.

The last thing I would ever use as a source is something that has Contreras ranked as the best defensive catcher in baseball. He probably has the quickest release and strongest arm but there is a hell of alot more that goes into being a good defensive catcher and he is shit at all of that.

Lots of guys are getting old and beat up and aren't what they used to be. Did you happen to watch the playoffs? It was a shitstorm behind the plate. So before you kick Contreras to the curb, look around.

They haven't made any long-term commitments to my knowledge (Nova, Alfonso and McCann are all on 1 year deals) so there's that.

The moves themselves don't change the overall outlook much if their goal is to begin turning the corner next season. Everything will still fall on the young talent developing at the major league level.

Nova was probably a decent move if he can throw 170IP and not get shelled in the AL, but, he doesn't matter if Giolito sucks again, etc.

Runners steal on pitchers, not catchers. And as UMN says above, there is a lot more to catching than throwing out runners.

Anyway, the Sox had exactly one player who was adept at getting on base and they dumped him for a middle reliever who walks way too many guys. But by all means, let's throw a fucking party because Tim Anderson improved to getting on base at a 29% clip.

Alonso will most likely be a 2 yr deal. He has a $9M option for '20 that vests with 550 plate appearances in 2019 or 1,100 plate appearances in 2018-19 combined (he had 574 AB's last season). As long as he stays healthy he should easily get there.

Everything on defense is run prevention. Throwing out 27 runners as Contreras and McCann did is big. I disagreed with Hahn on Narvaez as much as anybody but it's over and done with. McCann was the best option unless you want to give up a fortune in talent for Realmuto

I don't see the point in getting rid of whichever two of Castillo/Smith/Narvaez you could have kept just to get worse at catcher unless you were going to play your own homegrown guys.

He fucked up bad. Nothing me and you can do about it. No one but me and you are ripping him. Eventually MANY will. But fuck it, there's a bigger picture. McCann is fine.
