Almost only counts in horseshoes, hand grenades, and Viking playoff games.

Ray Meyer and the DePaul final four team is the peak of both Chicago college basketball, and possibly the peak of urban school college basketball.

To the latter point maybe the 3 final 4 Big East teams, but the end of DePaul was the harbinger of the end of urban school powerhouses in college basketball.

I thought that also but then Villanova came along to spoil the theory.

40 years ago the following schools were CBB powerhouses: Houston, DePaul, Marquette, St. John’s, Memphis, Temple, probably another urban school or two that I am forgetting. Exactly none of those teams is relevant now, although Calapari had Memphis humming a few years ago.

Sure Nova is rocking like Memphis was a decade ago, but the fact that one urban team is enjoying success doesn’t negate the general fact that CBB power has transitioned from urban schools to essentially power 5 state flagship schools.

The reasoning behind the decline in the city schools is easy to track. You can pin it all on one thing, ESPN. Before ESPN if you wanted your friends and family to see you play you had to go to a school close to your home and since most bball players come from urban areas it made sense that there were so many great city schools around the country. Once ESPN showed off and college ball took off that barrier was erased. You can now go to basically any major conferenc school in the country and get a guarantee that 90% of your games will be on some form of national television. Chicago kids no longer are stuck with DePaul, New York kids don't need St. Johns etc etc.

This isn't it. ESPN in essence built the Big East. Big East was loaded with Big City Schools. Pitt, Georgetown, St. John's, Villanova all big city schools. The reason that big city schools began to lose out to major univ. is because major Universities had larger Alumni bases with much more money in their booster/alumni funds. In short they had more money to spend on players. You have to play to pay and for whatever reason a number of big city schools couldn't pony up the dough to pay for frontline talent.

UCLA is a big city school that has done OK. forgot them.

Football money helps too. Villanova is lucky that Jay Wright has stuck around with his low pay. Illinois is paying their coach more than Villanova is paying him.

football money is nice, but that's not the reason top flight players stopped going to city schools and started going all over the place. It's all about being on TV. Without ESPN there's no way a place like Iowa State is able to come into Chicago and consistently grab great players year to year. But, be able to tell the kids that all their games will be on ESPN at least once a week and it no longer matters that your school is 5 hours away and in the middle of corn field.

TV money paid to your schools from power conferences allows them an opportunity to pay more their players. Most of your big city schools aside from the ones in the Big East were housed in smaller conferences or were independents. College basketball was a much smaller enterprise during the 70's WIth the advent of ESPN it took off.

Sadly, any field goal or extra point attempt that hits the uprights, crossbar, etc. is now officially referred to as a; "DOINK", "DOUBLE-DOINK" or preferably, a "PARKEY".

No argument, but didn't ESPN do a lot for Duke with Dick Vitale screaming like an idiot year after year, too?

College basketball has always been about the head coach and their ability to recruit. DePaul rose to the top on Ray Meyer, Georgetown on John Thompson, UNLV on Tark, Carnesecca at St. John’s, Syracuse on Boeheim, etc. Those guys leave and the program naturally drops off. Only the premier schools can replace a legend with another one. It’s not just city schools, plenty of examples close to home in the Big 10. Look at Indiana after Knight was fired, Keady at Purdue, even Henson at Illinois.

Youngest kids upstaging the others, especially the failed firstborn who's never met expectations.

The Bulls put this city on the sports map in the modern era. Without those six championships this city would be a fucking joke.

Don’t care

Fuck the Bulls

That franchise could fold tomorrow, and I wouldn’t notice other than hearing Bernstein cry about it on air.

Rudimentary information for the "Chicago Sports Fan 101" Course Guide.

I'll start it off...

No "Crowd Wave" at Wrigley Field. Correct
Michael Jordan is the greatest - period. Six finals, six titles, six finals MVPs...Correct
Walter Payton was, is and always will be beloved. Also the best all-round football player to ever put on spikes and better than all of the halfbacks except Jim Brown...Correct
Cheering loudly is expected during the National Anthem at Blackhawks' home games. Correct
Fireworks & Pinwheels at Comiskey Park (Yes, it will always be called "Comiskey") are a good thing. Correct

Light 'em up!

You can be a fan of either the Cubs or the Sox but not both (already mentioned by someone else).
The Sox whored themselves to gamblers and threw the 1919 World Series.
Jim Thompson whored the state to Reinsdorf and prevented the Sox from moving to Florida (where they belong).
Outside of Bridgeport and its environs very few people care about the Sox.
The Bulls were great in the early and mid 70s.
The Stadium was the best place ever to see a hockey game (Let's go Hawks!).
