Seems they were pursuing an armed suspect

I guess they took the instructions to "follow the tracks" a bit too literally

Awful. Families are losing loved ones for the holidays and they were just doing their jobs.

Scanner audio is here https://clyp.it/efrdnvmv

It sounds like these cops were hit 15 minutes *after* the suspect was apprehended, which begs the question, what were they doing on the tracks?

Their jobs. Looking for something the suspects could have tossed on the tracks? Considering your reaction when others disrespect someone you care about it's probably a good idea to have a little compassion for others.

15 minutes passed through from apprehension of suspect until the train hit them. Couldn't someone have possibly thought it might be a good idea to perhaps halt trains for a bit?

Does that mean the suspects can be charged with murder/homicide?

Does Illinois have a "felony murder" statute? If so, then yes they can.

You don't look both ways before you run across train tracks? You don't hear the sound of a train coming? I don't get this. They literally hit the tracks as the train was coming? Both of them? Must be. That's unbelievable.

Its a stretch, but they could have done something fucked up that was caught on bodycam and decided to both commit Hara Kiri.

I wondered what had an inordinate number of cops hauling ass for now a no apparent reason. Poor families.

I dunno. sometimes those bastards can sneak up on you. maybe they stepped out after another train passed, not realizing one was coming the other way. sometimes in a fury, you get tunnel vision as to your surroundings.

It was going past a Metra station just prior to the location. When a train passes a station they do not stop at, they sound their horn (or at least they are supposed to).

Yeah on it’s face this story makes no sense. Somethings missing.

I went to high school with one of the officer's older brother, and while we didn't know each other, it appears we have many mutual friends. Never easy to lose somebody, but its even tougher during this time of the year.

Heck, the story being told to the press is not even honest. It's being told as if they were killed in pursuit of the suspect.

I posted the link to the scanner audio earlier. You can listen to it for yourself and clearly hear that the suspect is apprehended 15 minutes prior to the call about men being hit by the train.

The Tribune article repeats the official police line and I'll quote it

https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/loc ... story.html

Quote:
As the two officers conducted surveillance, they “spotted a suspect scrambling up to the Metra tracks and were pursuing him when they were hit by an outbound South Shore train at the 103rd Street Rosemoor stop,” police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said. It’s not clear whether the officers followed the suspect up the side of the railroad embankment, or went up stairs at a nearby station.

The scanner audio here tells a different story:

Isn't it possible that:

1. Officers chased the suspect and were hit by the train - time 0

2. The suspect was apprehended - some time after time 0

3. The call regarding the officers who were hit at time 0 was placed to dispatch - 15 minutes after event 2 occurred

I don't find it implausible at all that the officers were struck by the train and there was a delay between that event and the call to report it. I'm not saying that IS what happened, but I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility at all.

The train hit them from behind. They didn't hear it or see it coming because the sound and the lights of the northbound train was coming in the opposite direction. They never had a chance.

Well other than it’s pretty hard to get hit unless you’re standing on the tracks . Which, CPD or not , they should know better not to do unless you’ve been notified that train traffic has been stopped because you’re out there . Something didn’t get relayed to the right people . I’ve been on MANY trains that have been prevented from moving at all due to police activity on the line somewhere
.

Does that metra line's trains run on 'the wrong side' like Union Pacific, i.e. on left side rather than right? If so I can only speculate maybe they saw the train coming but thought they were safely on the other set of tracks when in fact were not?

Regardless, it is still tragic.
