I Worked with a cop that killed herself years ago. It was perplexing as hell to me because she always appeared to be a person that "had it all together". She always appeared to be easygoing and even keeled. Then one day she went to breakfast in Rogers Park with her estranged husband and his daughter by another woman (I believe). I guess he told her that there was no coming back and he was divorcing her. While they were leaving the diner she shot him, his daughter, and then killed herself. He was also a cop. I ended up meeting her daughter who happened to be friends with one of good friends years later. She had some heat too. When she found out where I worked she told me who her mother was and I thought damn that was your mother. She figured that I had to know what happened.

I imagine some of them work in areas and see things that they can't help but take home with them. The sleep deprivation can't help their mental health. Ticking time bombs.

Just a couple of days ago I talked to my wife about this very thing. I have always believed that for both cops and combat soldiers that they need to rotate these people in order to give them time to what I would call "decompress". I have PTSD and know a number of other guys who do and when people are in constant fear of getting killed or maimed in their "working day" it greatly affects them.

One thing that should be considered and examined carefully, is rotating people out of combat jobs. Give them time to recover just as they would recover from battlefield wounds. And get good counseling people for these folks.
