It sounds like these cops were hit 15 minutes *after* the suspect was apprehended, which begs the question, what were they doing on the tracks?

Their jobs. Looking for something the suspects could have tossed on the tracks? Considering your reaction when others disrespect someone you care about it's probably a good idea to have a little compassion for others.

15 minutes passed through from apprehension of suspect until the train hit them. Couldn't someone have possibly thought it might be a good idea to perhaps halt trains for a bit?

They where looking for shell casings you know evidence.

yep so don't you think perhaps someone in their chain of command with a functioning brain should've then thought about the possibility of trains rolling through and put a temporary hold on them?

I can understand this situation if they are in active pursuit of the suspect as there wouldn't be time to hold the trains. In this case, 15 minutes elapsed, during which the trains could have been halted for a half hour or whatever time was needed.

Killed on the job looking for shell casings for a crime that will likely be probation in Cook county. Terrible.

A good read written by a 30 year veteran of the Detroit Fire Department recalled a rescue they had of a car on the tracks where they were assured by command there was no train traffic coming. Sure enough, just as they get the guy out the regular Amtrak train rolls through and all narrowly miss losing their lives. You would think train traffic would be stopped in this situation though.
