They get heat because they won’t join a conference.

I meant heat in a positive publicity way.

I really don't think MANY believe this anymore, Doc.

The accessibility to other successful programs is so much easier than the last time ND was a legit powerhouse.

I think that time has passed. I dont see ND ever becoming a top team that can compete or dominate teams like bama or clemson.

And maybe they should join a conference like the ACC.

exactly. I liked ND during the Lou Holtz era but then they became so arrogant of a program. I watch NCAA FB once or twice a year and that's the champ games. I like seeing the best teams. Not wannabe's like ND.

I didnt even need to watch ND all year to know they weren't going to compete w/ the top teams.

I'm sure it's my bias, but the majority of heat concerning ND wasn't positive outside of the local Chicago media.

It's like the Yankees or the Cowboys or the Lakers or the Bears - there are certain organizations that draw more interest.

Love them or hate them...and it seems everybody here hates them...I don't... but it just seems to be true.

More arrogant than the Lou Holtz era?

I'd ask if you watched any of that but you are probably watching it right now.

ND isn't in the same category as the Lakers/ Yankees and Cowboys. Bears aren't either. ND is more of a regional following now.

In 88 when they won it was great. It was a great story of a program down for a long time and Holtz brought them back to prominance.

But after that they became an arrogant program.

I honestly think information accessibility is killing these older notions of certain markets bringing more interest than other, more qualified organizations/programs.

That could just be the millennial in me, but yeah. I'm over the legacy garbage.

The cowboys haven't been in a super bowl in over 20 years, and the NFL has reached never before seen popularity levels in that time.

The legacy theories don't hold up.

i agree as well. I think we have more options to entertain us these days than the past.

I sometimes think back on how big of a bears fan i was in the 80s/90s. spent thousands of dollars on the franchise. Now seems foolish and a complete waste of time and money and energy. Could have been doing something better but didnt have as many options compared to today.

Funny that you said that. It dawned on me earlier that aside from occasional tickets, I don't think that I've spent a cent on a pro sports team in 20 years.

If this is the case, it is a pretty big region. I know on my side of PA, ND is a solid number 2 behind Penn State in football following. I'm sure it is 2 or 3 on PittMike's side as well.

there is a big cowboys following in alaska, oregon, and Utah.

That's what I call a national following.

PA sure, ND is probably #2 or #3 there as PA is closer to IN. It's still a national following but not like the Cowboys or Lakers.
