That was a great comeback. So unexpected because they had handled the first half with no problem. Nice capper to the NYE games and fun to watch with some Chicago area friends that may not be die hard NW fans, but we all sort of like them.

They were toast and then they got the defensive TD and all of the sudden they were a different team. It was fun to watch.

Aw hell, I bailed and missed it.

Missed the first half but got to watch the second. Wondered why I was wasting my time and figured I’d turn it off soon and then things changed a bit. Glad I missed first half.

Sounds like Fitz doesn’t have much interest in leaving. Tend to believe him as he’s in the perfect place for him really. Maybe he tries to squeeze out another 500k from the Ryan’s and company to push Him to 4 mill a year but I don’t know. Hard to believe he’s been there for 13 seasons now.

Gotta imagine he knows that the NU gig is probably as good as it gets. His talent is recruiting and keeping his nose out of trouble... and that’s enough to keep him .500 or better at NU, which is probably much better than we should be.

Full credit to Fitz for recruiting successes. We aren’t gonna beat Ohio State for recruits, but thankfully we’ve been winning our fair share vs. Illinois, Indiana and the like. He’s not a phenomenal game strategist by any means. And he has had way too much loyalty to sub-par assistant coaches (sorry EIU, Adam Cushing is a dud). But I suppose what we lose in innovation, we gain in program stability.

But one of the real reasons for success which doesn’t get much pub is the school admin. For years NU was standing in the way of all athletic programs. When Morty Shapiro arrived (a year after we hired the best AD in the country from NIU, Jim Phillips) things changed. There is a commitment to build, a necessary element in the athletic arms race.

There is a nice story at NU. Ultimately I wish it could translate into more fans in the stands. Maybe it’s impossible, but I’d hope we could get more kids wearing the purple and into the stands on Saturdays

Really need to improve that out of conference W/L record.

Otherwise, pretty good season.
