Farming is a thankless business.

If you are an individual/family that is truly "land rich", you should sell it because the return on your asset would be far greater doing something else.

But, farming is what farmers love so most never go that route. It's a family business until you are forced to sell to the corporate farms.

No doubt. I know numerous “land rich” farmers who could sell and retire but they just love what they do too much to do anything else. Very admirable in my opinion. Do what you love and makes you happy. However, they do like to bitch about how tough it is to be a farmer while sitting on millions of dollars of farmland. Everyone needs a hobby.

There is an aspect of farming that is very fulfilling in being outdoors and creating a product. But, those land rich farmers are probably also sitting on $500k of equipment financing. More power to them. I love to eat their food as much as the next guy.

I wouldn't say it just a "latest toy thing". That equipment is just expensive. Even the used stuff unless you are just buying a piece of crap which is inadvisable.

That's why it isn't very feasible to have a small family farm any longer. It's too capital intensive. You can run about as long as you can keep the old equipment running.

God-forbid you ever have to buy a new combine.
