Per month, what do you spend for content? Some may be inclusive of online and printed material which is fine. I am curious what this group actually spends per month on news media. FTR I currently spend nothing and am looking to change that.

For this topic Porn news should be treated as a separate category.

The Athletic for $30-something a year. That's it.

Too much. Every now and then I decide I need to read more news and get a few subscriptions to go along with all the free industry stuff I get sent (incidently they’ve been warning me that my Progressive Farmer and Beef subscription will be cancelled unless I update my information. They’ve been warning me for 10 years). I’m then great about reading for a few weeks but slowly fade away. I think I’d do better with physical copy vs tablet.

$0. I've been tempted to subscribe to The Athletic a few times but it just seems unnecessary.

I pay $99 a year for the Purdue rivals site, mostly so I have a message board I can go to that doesn't suck.

Nice topic.

I get the Athletic which is $5 per month. I love the Athletic and will keep subscribing. I also have a yearly subscription to McKeen's fantasy hockey platform ($3 a month) but I will not renew it.

I used to get The Sporting News, the USA Today weekly sports paper, and a variety of fishing magazines. I am contemplating getting a subscription to Illinois Game and Fish since it is $8 for the year.

I was paying for The Athletic, but I dropped it when they hired Laz.

Other than that, I do pay for WSJ, which is probably the only news org that is worth it.

Economist Print: $100/year
Washington Post Digital: $50/year
New Yorker Print + Digital: $90/year
The Athletic: $30/year

I use my brother's login for the Wall Street Journal.

I won't re-new the New Yorker or the Athletic when my current subscription expires. The Economist/WAPO/WSJ are equally enjoyed and read frequently.

How much were you willing to pay before online content? Did you just bum newspapers office people, or never read? Not a personal shot. I spent I think $10-$12 per month before the big flip on maybe 4 dailt and monthly periodicals. It is probably best for me to pick a range to pay again. The news is there. Since the changes in delivery I stopped almost all payments for news.

About 12.50/mo.

That sounds about right. I'd have to get a local rag in there too in place of either Atlantic or New Yorker.

If you are getting the Athletic for primarily the Hawks, it is not worth it.

I was in grade school before online content so yeah, I bummed my parents paper

For someone my age it’s difficult to justify spending money on content. There’s a whole lot of high quality free stuff out there.

Why that Avatar sir?
Any straight news or all related to sport? What kind of fishing?

I love my avatar! Buffalo Bill is one of the best cinema monsters ever. You don't like it?

No, I don't pay for any news cites but I would be open to it. Fishing- all bass fishing. I like Great Lakes smallmouth the best. Gonna try for some lake trout tomorrow or Saturday to help combat cabin fever.

I rewatched the flick recently and agree that is an awesome character. My preference for fishing was always dry fly. I went to mexico ...Ron speed's adventure...a few times with my dad and had a blast. Small mouth is fun in spring iirc. Never went when it's this cold.

I just buy the DH, which is up to $64 per month. I used to buy the Economist, but I sick of the same articles over and over.

I don't even want to tally it up.

Tribune (which immediately goes into the recycling bin)
NYT
WSJ
FT
New Yorker

Nothing anymore. The last magazine periodical I paid for was Playboy and I stopped getting that in the mid 2000s. I did have a subscription to my
local newspaper for about a year but I cancelled that last year as I can read it online for free. I thought I would be getting coupons and stuff with
the Sunday edition but none of it was worth it. My first 5 years out of college I worked for one of the premiere printing companies in the world.
Pretty fascinating industry and process really. I left 15 years ago because I was pretty sure that industry was done for. I wasn't exactly right but
they have had to move into other businesses like direct mail to stay relevant. I get a few magazines at home but it is from various points from my
credit card.

Everyone can always be more informed. I'm not sure there's a correlation between spending money on content and being more informed though. My guess is there's likely not one.

The real question is if the additional revenue enhances content. My guess is that depends on the daily/periodical. Some will choose to invest in better content. Some will not. A story worth publishing can cost more to investigate. It may or may not require a better journalist.

This is all conceptual as it takes more than the 15 people that have responded here to really make some difference in how news is disseminated. We could probably get better news if more people paid the right provider for the service. It probably would make you more informed. The general public at this moment based on the sample size above won't get that. I know there are stories I want to read but can't as they require subscription. I need to locate those worth paying and a good monthly number to pay

What percentage of our parents paid for news? Were they better informed? Hard to say. My parents followed the hatchetman approach to the local rag on many occasions.

all of our parents paid for newspapers/magazines. that was the only option other than news and talk radio. that money has shifted to cell phone plans and internet service.

back in the 70s the papers were both about an inch thick. evey week there would be 100 lbs to tie up and put out with the trash.

I'd agree. But the news content there isn't always news worthy.

Some of the older guys may remember, but if you hit the change return button on the trib/times newspaper box with the heel of your palm real hard while pulling the handle, the door would pop open. This was great if you had a paper route but ran short. Figured it was all coming out of the company's dime anyway.

I started stealing content at an early age.
