I would trade Schwarber (and a prospect or Almora) to Cleveland for Kluber and sign Harper.

Not trying to be silly about but I get the sense that he's waiting for Cubs to free up cash.

Would take more then Schwarber and Almora to get Kluber. Cubs don't have the prospects to pull off that trade.

It was speculated this morning on Inside the Clubhouse that Harper is purposely waiting for Machado to sign with a team first before he accepts a contract.

Ensuring his deal is the most lucrative?

Theo has to roll out Jim Hendry’s barrel if he wants to dump Heyward on someone.

Kluber is 32 and Schwarber / Almora are both in their mid-20s. Schwarber is a born DH, will hit 35-45 HRs per year, and is from Ohio. Almora is a plus defender and a decent stick. The financial considerations can be worked out and would not stop a deal like this.
The Cubs would get the best of the deal for 2 or so, Cleveland would be better off thereafter. This would work for both teams.

Schwarber and Almora cost pennies. Trading them does not make room financially for Harper. Cubs need to move a big contract.

They can get rid of Heyward if they package him with Contreras. I don't know why they love shit for brains Wily. He has a cannon of an arm but is otherwise an awful catcher. There is a way to dance with the Marlins and get rid of Heyward and get JT back but its going to be a blockbuster.

I think it could work if it was a 3-way deal and each team took on part of Heyward's remaining contract:

Trade away:
- Cubs give up Heyward (eating 1/3 of his remaining salary) and Contreras
- Marlins give up Realmuto and their 3rd best pitching prospect
- Team X gives up their 2nd and 4th best pitching prospects, a young Caratini-ish type of catcher, a couple of A-ball lottery tickets, and pays 1/6 of Heyward's salary

Get back:
- Cubs get three pitching prospects, a young catcher to pair with Caratini in the #8 slot, lottery tickets for South Bend, and most importantly are free of 2/3 of Heyward's remaining salary
- Marlins get Heyward at 1/2 price for the next 5 years to be either a leader or a trade chip, and Contreras to be the new face of the franchise.
- Team X gets Realmuto without sacrificing anybody on the 25-man roster

I think the Cubs will end up eating up to 60% of Heyward's contract, a roster player, and a minor league prospect. They won't get an all-star caliber player in return either. Teams know the Cubs are in panic mode. A shrewd gm is going to take Theo to the wood shed as the Harper clock ticks.

Teams who would acquire Heyward with other players must get him cheap, giving them the option of cutting him in a couple years, and not looking like fools.

Keep hearing Giants Cubs trade for Heyward.

Not sure why anyone would take Heyward.

I guess he would be great in that expansive Right Field in SF.

Because they will be taking bad contracts back.

Wonder if the Cubs have to take back Samardzija or Cueto as part of the deal.

In a forest preserve outfield like SF he is solid. They have been linked to him the last few years. I believe they have an awful contract in Cueto so there is a possiblity to do business. Heyward doesn't suck...his contract sucks. He has value but the cubs are going to have to eat what they overpaid him.
