No, it wasn't. It was an absolutely horrendous hire and mostly everyone here called it at the time iirc.

People said similar things after Rivera left. It took the Bears a few years to recover from that. The Bears can't afford to lose any time due to a clumsy transition or bad hire--their window is now.

Sounds like the deal is getting finalized now.

Arians and Bowles seem to be buddies based on their Cardinals connection.

Agree. However, the Fox hire was a McCaskey/Philips hire, not a Pace hire IMO.

That would be GREAT if true. But Biggs never seems to be right about these kinds of things.

I'm not saying that they shouldn't find the best and brightest. I'm just saying that losing Fangio isn't the end of the world.

I mean is this even a tough choice? The best defense in the NFL stocked with talent or a shitshow?

This is a larger problem I have with FF being unaware of his hindsight biases. Fox went 46-18 with Denver and made the SB once. Before that he went to the SB with Carolina and made that team into a contender before going through some rough years at the very end of his tenure there. So you have a candidate for coach who has been to the SB twice with a career record well above 500 and you hire that coach to fix your piece of shit team. How is this a bad choice?

It absolutely was an upper management hire, supposedly to ease Pace into the job...and as a safety net in case Pace crashed and burned. All it did was stifle Pace's growth into the position.

This really sucks, to lose the playoff game and then your best coach in less than a week.

The flag should be put at half staff for all mourning Bears fans.

Why do you think that Fox got fired in Denver? Why do you think that once he was replaced, they went from getting blown the fuck out in the SB to winning it all with an even worse version of Peyton Manning?

All due respect but you are mistaken in who has hindsight bias when it comes to these discussions. You often just blindly quote historical records and results and, willfully or not, ignore much needed context. It's why you were wrong about Fox three years ago, are wrong now, and are only allowing that I was right because of "hindsight bias", when I clearly said right from the start that it was a horrible hire(and I wasn't trolling, as I said the opposite about Nagy).

Do better my friend, or stick to NBA discussions :D

He may want to get credit for building his own defense. The Bears should have already been in talks with Donatell to take over the defense while Fangio was interviewing elsewhere.

Either way it will piss me off to find out Pace/Nagy were caught flat footed by this and thus settle for some scrap heap hire.

This is a tough loss. I would prefer the Bears hire Donatell and try to retain as many of his assistants as possible. Nagy now has a branch to his tree.

"Find" someone?

With this Bears defense, the absolute best defensive coaches out there are going to be beating down the doors at Halas Hall looking for a job.

Wasn't Bowles considered "the absolute best" DC candidate available?

He's going to the Bucs.

Yeah, Frank, it doesn't really work that way. Money and prior relationships talk.

Thank goodness Ryan Pace appears to be somewhat competent. If we had GB decision makers around here we'd probably be looking at Oakland or TB for our next DC.

Ryan Pace hired John Fox.

He hired Nagy. Fox was hired for him.

A lot of 4th quarter and 2nd half letdowns but he was making chicken salad before this season. Very few can do that.

Wade Phillips is my favorite member of the Sean McVey coaching tree, and I can't understand why he's not getting more interest.

Nagy and Bowles are friends. Gabriel said he talked to a source, which he inadvertently gave away was Bowles agent, who said they had been talking the last few wees.
