Interesting story about big companies moving in and hiring--while the town goes downhill.

I read that this morning, although the person who posted it said it was about "downstate Illinois." I know we're Chicago-centric, but Will County being downstate is a stretch.

The kicker is at the end when they say they figure the companies will just leave when their tax breaks are up.

Well, they are pretty smart to hire people with temp agencies and not to allow unions.

And those companies are the ones benefiting from the massive tax cuts in addition to the sweetheart deals.

We can have a pointed political section here, but it's increasingly difficult to argue that (sacred cow) corporations aren't the real problem.

it sounds as if unions are exactly what those people need. may result in a higher cost for amazon prime, or they'll jus tmove to wisconsin

That factory worker going to bin number 2361 , putting what's in the bin into the Amazon box is woefully underpaid.

Temp Jobs and warehouses killed nothing. Elwood never prospered. They didn't lose grocery stores or restaurants. They never had any.

The Wedge Salad is pretty good too.

Thanks JORR for taking me on a couple of lunches to your regular haunts.

50/50 on going there tonight. Not sure I want to make the trip for dinner on a Thursday. But she used to do supper clubs with her family and still enjoys the vibe.

Goddammit. I was going to say (other than the Amish) but I was too lazy to edit it.

A thread that starts with a long form article on the hell laid down on the working poor turns into a discussion about fantastic supper clubs. Very problematic.

They should focus on jobs that require skill - like pool cue repair.

Ah, is that Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery? Really cool place.

Right across the expressway is the Midewin prairie. They have buffalo roaming there.
