There needs to be a few changes. There needs to be a cut off on these guys like the 1st week of January, and maybe the next time you can sign if after ST. Another, is the trading during/after the winter meetings. Needs to be a cut off there as well. I feel, draft picks should be able to be traded.

MLB prefer people to talk about the game as long as possible. This keeps baseball in the press year round.

Didn't they change the rule so picks may now be traded? Maybe it's just compensatory picks though.

I know the Cardinals traded their bullshit competitive balance pick this year.

I think it is only those picks.

While I don't think there should be a salary cap, I do think there should be some consideration given to a contract length cap. 10 years is fucking ridiculous. If these guys were held to 5 years I think they would both have jobs by now and the market for them would be far more competitive. With these 10 year deals you are hoping for 5 seasons at their highest production while knowing you are going to take it in the ass for the final 5 but at the same salary.

I think the problem is, it is only with position players. Right now, you are having a shift in pitching, from SPs being important to now RPs.

That would suck for teams that have an off season injury pop up out of nowhere.

Agree on draft picks though.

I don't get how you can say they have done everything within reason to get him?

If it is purely about money then up your offer to get him. They were talking about possibly signing both Machado and Harper, so they clearly have the ability to go a little higher for the guy at the top of the list.

Now if Machado picks Philly or NY because of other reasons than money then there is nothing you can do and you can be content knowing your team did everything within reason to land him But if this is purely about money then the Sox need to commit to getting him no matter what. Otherwise it does nothing but tell the fan base we are not really serious.

I’m guessing the Sox do have the highest offer but this isn’t his first choice to play here . He’s hoping one of the other teams he’d rather play for up there offer a bit more .

I was thinking this too. Maybe the Phillies prefer Harper.

The Phillies may prefer Harper....Keyser was saying earlier the White Sox prefer Harper. Harper has a stronger brand to sell tickets, but will be a higher price tag. For the Sox, Machado is a better fit...fills a bigger need.

I don't see any scenario where Philly is a better option for Machado if the money is equal or close. I think the Sox do have the best offer out there and the agent is desperately trying to raise the price tag....it's likely not working.

The next CBA will get very interesting. If the owners are colluding....they're doing a really good job if it. I do agree they should put a FA deadline in place for some time in earlier January so this shit doesn't drag out like this.

Why you all believe the owners would want a deadline? Why would the players accept it?

Phillies trying to out Sox the Sox

Quote:
The White Sox can offer something no other team in the Manny Machado derby can: the opportunity to play alongside brother-in-law Yonder Alonso and good buddy/winter workout buddy Jon Jay, a chance to unite the "Miami Baseball Brotherhood" on the South Side.
But the Philadelphia Phillies, the White Sox chief and perhaps only remaining competitor in this sweepstakes, have made their own interesting move to try and add an aspect of comfort and familiarity to their pitch.
According to a couple reports, the Phillies added former Baltimore Orioles coach Bobby Dickerson to their coaching staff. Dickerson has been described as Machado's mentor and had a close relationship with him during the 26-year-old free-agent superstar's time in Baltimore.

The LaMaheiu/Yanks signing should take away real bargaining power for MM. Phils are focused on Harper this weekend, Hahn has to swoop in and grab him. Don't F around and let Phils get a deal done with Harper then throw a stupid deal at MM.

Manny would be a fool to play second fiddle to Harper.

Except there's a strong chance Manny would be clearly better once they start playing.

Don’t you think Hahn has already put forth his best offer ? I don’t know how much more he’s supposed to do to Dr Wu this guy. Sign his brother in law , sign his best friend . At this point I’d be a little pissed off if I were him. Either you want to fucking play here or you don’t .

I believe that he will be better. For marketing purposes he'll still be #2. He deserves to be the face of an organization.

I understand it gets frustrating but Hahn has zero leverage.

I agree, but if after a season or two Manny is better, he will become the face.

The kicker is if he does sign here at the presser he’ll be “ oh yeah this was my first choice all along , had to let the process play out “ bulllshit when it’s obvious that’s not the case .

Maybe he doesn't want to be the face of the organization?

All this really rides on Philly (or another team) making an outrageous offer above the Sox offer...which I think that's what the agent is pushing.

Just wait and see
