Maybe he doesn't want to be the face of the organization?

All this really rides on Philly (or another team) making an outrageous offer above the Sox offer...which I think that's what the agent is pushing.

Just wait and see

His problem is the only team willing to spend crazy money wants Harper. As long as they believe that they have a shot at Harper they won't go all in on Manny.

The Sox should trade for Almora.

The Sox and Hahn have tickled fans asses with a feather sufficiently that they simply cannot run the risk of losing to the Phillies. I don't know how they could show their faces if they lose a head to head competition when they have all they money they need and have put this fanbase through the indignity of the sell off.

Sox could sign Manny for 50 million per year and still have a payroll in the bottom half (probably even lower) in the league.

The kick in the stomach is going to be that in 3-4 years he will have an opt out and will have to blow him again to win his affection. Even if the Sox do everything right for him and begin to win, he will still be looking to play for the Yankees.

Win a World Series (or two) and put the team in a position to win another one. That's how the Sox stop the Yankee crap before it starts.

I doubt that would change his affection for the team. Yankees are going to be in the discussion for a WS every year these next few years as well. Maybe them cheaping out on him will sour him on the team.

I like that you guys have angst about re-signing him before he signs at all. Very Sox-ey.

bull

How can it be Sox-ey when the biggest contract ever issued by the team is 64 million. We are in uncharted territory

68 million.

And they've been rebuffed on bigger offers.

It's Sox-ey to worry that there might be a bad part to a great thing (signing him)

The Soxiest thing to happen would be that the Sox sign Machado, he tears it up in Spring Training, hits a HR in his first at bat in the Home Opener, and the Sox get off to a hot start. Then in late April, Machado gets HBP in the wrist and requires surgery rendering his bat virtually useless for the rest of his career.

Any of those offers...it is safe to say they were nowhere near the market.

This is the first tie since albert Belle where they've made a legitimate run at a top free agent

Uncharted territory, indeed.

The Sox-i-est thing to happen would be news gets released their offer was 4 yr $80 million....I have now bought in to the theory that Jerry is stacking the team to sell. Time is here.

About Machado or just in general? I know that he's old but Jerry has always been a baseball guy. I believe 2005 meant more to him than anything Jordan did.

Don’t think Keyser has any inside sources but yeah that’s pretty easy to guess based on Jerry’s history. Hopefully he dies soon.

Its also not like anyone else is jumping in and offering him what he wants. It would be one thing if there was a bidding war and he was coming back to you to allow you to match or make a better offer.

Sometimes you throw in a little bit more just to get a deal done. We're not talking about a Tim Anderson negotiation. Signing Machado is a HUGE win.

You could be creative though and make something happen that works for both of the. 10 yr 250 mil base deal.

1 Yr 30 mil
2 Yr 30 mil
3 Yr 30 mil
4 Yr 20 mil (Player option to terminated contract but superseded by 10 Mil team bonus)
5 Yr 20 mil (Player option to terminate contract but superseded by 12 Mil team bonus)
6 Yr 20 mil (Player option to terminate contract, 14 Mil bonus if option not exercised)
7 Yr 20 mil (Player option to terminate contract but superseded by 15 Mil bonus)
8 Yr 20 mil (this can keep going and going but I would assume someone would end the contract by now.
9 Yr 20 mil
10Yr 20 mil
