The Sox and Hahn have tickled fans asses with a feather sufficiently that they simply cannot run the risk of losing to the Phillies. I don't know how they could show their faces if they lose a head to head competition when they have all they money they need and have put this fanbase through the indignity of the sell off.

Sox could sign Manny for 50 million per year and still have a payroll in the bottom half (probably even lower) in the league.

The kick in the stomach is going to be that in 3-4 years he will have an opt out and will have to blow him again to win his affection. Even if the Sox do everything right for him and begin to win, he will still be looking to play for the Yankees.

The Soxiest thing to happen would be that the Sox sign Machado, he tears it up in Spring Training, hits a HR in his first at bat in the Home Opener, and the Sox get off to a hot start. Then in late April, Machado gets HBP in the wrist and requires surgery rendering his bat virtually useless for the rest of his career.
