Wait so we want the Sox to bid against themselves? Why?

For marketing, yes. Not as a player, though. I don't see him going from a starish player into a superstar at this point.

When you have legit weaknesses in 4-5 positions, no bull-pen, and below average starting pitchers, Babe Ruth or Ken Griffey Jr. himself isn't going to improve your team significantly. They have to get to be somewhere around an average young major league team before you bring in someone like Harper. It is unfortunate that the Sox chose this way as an organization but that horse has left the barn and they are STUCK with its consequences. It will take a lot of old fashioned luck in developing who they traded for and drafted as well as good fortune who they trade for or draft going forward for this team to ever get to the point of being an average team. My guess is at least two years if virtually all goes well for them.

Cause they were such a good team before they went with the rebuild.

I'm as negative as a typical Sox fan but if you have Machado-Abreu-what Jimenez is supposed to be batting 3-4-5 you're going to do some damage and if you get any kind of pitching you should compete in the Central.

Historically the Sox haven't had an issue developing pitching. This is why a bat like that will be huge.

I have little doubt that they will trade for or get a top line free agent pitcher in the next year. Pair that with Rodon, Kopech, Lopez, Dunning, Cease, and Giolito, I'm not too concerned with developing a pitching staff.

That is not the point. We can argue forever about the team before the rebuild but that is useless. They did what they did and the result of this is the team and roster that we have now and it is one if not the worst in all of baseball. Early results of the rebuild is meh as far as I am concerned. You may think it is better or whatever but that I my assessment.

What I am talking about is this notion that adding a Harper this year is stupid. With him, they are still a very bad team with holes at 3rd, DH, C, and two outfield positions. And a couple of other positions, namely SS and 2nd are iffy at best.

No you won't. Not with those existing holes in your team. Jimenez is a prospect also. You want Machado, I guess. I hate the guy but going with your desire, who plays the outfield? Who catches? Who DH's? 3rd base(if not Machado). YOu also say if you get any kind of pitching you should compete? How and where do you get good pitching? With what? After you squandered a shitload of money on Machado, what pitching is going to be able to get signed. Or do you assume this less than splendid farm system is going to cough up some decent starters let alone a closer and at least three decent other relievers?

Why do you hate a guy who is a solid fielder at two infield positions and is good for .850 OPS? That seems like a crazy guy to hate.

So I guess Bruce was wrong that the Sox wouldn't go beyond seven years. Maybe he should shut up and let real reporters cover the story.

Maybe it was. Obviously the agents want teams to negotiate against themselves. They even invent "mystery teams".

When they start inventing mystery teams, you gotta figure we are close to a decision.

The 8th year could be true if it's a team option. If the agent needs a face saving 8th year, that's what it will be.

Bryce Harper should hurry up and sign with the Phillies.....uhh, pretty please?

There isn't a lead. Everyone is waiting for someone to make a move.
