White Sox pinching pennies again.

Shame.

Yup. They are the scorpion and the fans are the frog.

The length of the contract is most likely irrelevant as:

1) even if happy, he will be opting out unless he falls off a cliff. Take out insurance for if he falls off a cliff.

2) the sox are at the very beginning of minor leaguers beginning to blossom which is going to keep the rest of the payroll low for several years

This is Khalil Mack. Manny becoming the face of the organization takes all the pressure off of Moncada, Eloy and everyone else about to arrive. They can grow in his shadow. His presence will make everyone else a little bit better.

Even further though, the organization really does owe it to the fans. They asked us to be patient and have faith in them when they sold off low cost stars. There were articles years ago that they were targeting this off season and its FA riches as the time to start spending. Well, ownership has absolutely lined its pockets for the last few years. Now its time to rejoin the MLB instead of some grotesque sub league shared by these tanking organizations. The absurdity of it all is that even if ownership gave him $50 million per year, they will still be lining their pockets due to a low payroll.

Pay the man his money or GTFO of baseball. I don't think I'm the only one thinking this way. I sense a fandom ready for full on revolution. If you don't come back with Manny or Harper, don't come back at all.

I remember Bernstein doing whole segments about how crazy it was to call Jerry Reinsdorf cheap. Just completely irate at the notion.

The good ole hate listening days.

Seem so long ago.

Also, didn't the Sox offer Fukudome more than the Cubs?

I think it's probably like 95%. Im just saying Machado may be part of the 5

Lester chose the Cub over the Giant who had offered more.

Zobrist chose the Cub over the Met who had offered more.

Though factoring tax implications the Cubs offered end up being larger. The differences weren't that large.

I know. Every player on the Cubs takes less to be on the historic team that didn't win for 108 years.

These are stories. Unless you absolutely know what was offered and can comp the two side by side, I'm going to say they took the highest offer.

The joke among lawyers is that they went to law school because there wasn't any math. I think we have seen with the way these locals have reported the Ricketts unending well of money that it is even more true among reporters. Throw numbers into the story and their eyes begin to cross.

Yea, I knew you would find that.

You're working backwards. It HAS to be more, let me go try and prove it.

They dont always take more. That's just something you say and want to believe. You just admitted we dont see the offer sheets. But you are 100% sure. It's ridiculous.

Do you think if the Giants offered him $300 million he would have declined?

It's been stated by the player and corroborated by the author.

$25 mill AVV doesn't sound correct. But if you are talking an 8yr $200mill with that 8th year being a team or mutual option, I still don't believe it is that low.

The player threw it out in a hyperbolic fashion.

I already stated that if the money difference is huge, then no. If its a few million bucks, then it's entirely plausible a player would choose a city/team he wants to go to.

Zobrist reportedly took 4/56 instead of 4/60 from 2 other teams. I dont find that to be the craziest thing ever.

I believe you but I just want to hammer my 95 thesis to the cathedral.

I'd just like the Sox to understand that it would be very easy for me to change my allegiances to the Brewers. I used to go to their games as a kid. Its an easy ride for me to get to games now. I'm fat and like beer.

I don't want to do it but they can't keep pushing me. It's not just about losses. I can handle losses especially during this time where my baseball interests are directed more at coaching. But they just cannot continue to operate as they do.

The bigger the contract the less relevant the extra couple million is. The crazy one is that relief pitcher last year taking a pretty decent percentage less.

Some of you guys are as bad as Julie.

If they offer Harper and/or Machado a good deal and they turn the Sox down, then fuck them.

You'll stay a fan just like always.

The Brewers? GTFO with that shit. You'll come crawling back in 2 years when they suck again.

Considering where salaries are now and where they will be in 7 years $25M a year would be chump change. You're going to have to be near or above $30M a year.

I'll still be a fan but $25M a year tells me you aren't trying to win. I'm hopeful that Keyser is right because I was seeing red.

Yup. Fans like Peeps are why Jerry doesn’t give a fuck about his franchise being a joke for a decade.

I agree. And I don't care about Jerry's money either. But I don't want to have my team in a spot where they've got tons of bad money on the books and they're stuck with it. That's why the Shields deal pissed me off so much. I don't even care about Tatis who is going to be Rookie of the Year in San Diego next season. He was 16. Who knew? But we had just gotten "Losing Pitcher" John Danks's bad money off the books and they jumped right back in with this turd.

What more can you do besides offer the guy a large contract? You want them to do what we all mocked the Cubs for with Soriano and just bid against themselves?

You guys talk tough now but then you're back at the games again next year.

Next year yes. But about 20 more years of being a bottom barrel team and I might be done.

He has 7 titles in my lifetime and almost always competitive teams. The other Chicago teams don't have 7 titles combined in the last 60 years. I will sour on Uncle Jerry if he fails to sign Machado though.

We've gone insane.

Offer a guy $25M a year and before you know anything about any other offer people want to jump to $30M a year.

If they signed Harper and Machado they would still have a low payroll. Money shouldn't be an issue considering that we won't have to pay anyone else for years.

With an offer like this , how can Harper refuse ? These stations really need

EVERYBODY with a smidge of baseball knowledge knew he was a turd. Do you know something about Machado the rest of us don't know?

and I'm not saying give up the farm for him. I am saying that devote yourself to getting him at the best price for yourself.

It's like house hunting and you come across one your wife loves. You know you cannot lose it and keep domestic tranquility but you have to pretend you can. I hope that is what JR is doing. I really do trust in him as a negotiator. I just don't know if he has the understanding that he can't lose this house.
