Negative. Not many encrypted licenses around these parts. Apparently there were a few years back but they've largely moved off them and are in the clear now. Guess the comms weren't reliable and cheap enough.

The only people I know with scanners are old with nothing to do. Then they tell you about everybodys business. Really.

Ok but the first time you say to Frank or Doug guess what the person on the next block over got busted for remember this conversation. Kinda did it in the OP. That's what old people do.

So... if the cops show up at your neighbors house and theres 3 cars there light blaring you don't ask your neighbor "dude what happened?"
You close your blinds and don't care to know?

I guess I find out thru neighborhood talk. If I knew someone with a police scanner or had a friend of a friend it'd be easier.

So you prefer 2nd hand gossip to real time factual data. But that makes me 65 and you.....?

No. I prefer existing in my own little world, independent of all others.

Clearly, as this non sequitur post illustrates quite well.

So there was a suicidal 16 year old literally 2 blocks from your house and you told "us" about it. Good use of time. What else are you going to do with that info? Help? Gossip? Pray? Volunteer? Nothing? What?

The people I know with scanners are old and listen a lot so they can tell stories. If you don't use it as a "community building tool" I feel like it's an invasion of privacy. Though I do see the "fun" and I understand the draw to it.

Excellent input. I'll mark you down in the "invasion of privacy" column.

Is it still an invasion of privacy if in two days the story about the kid is printed in the local paper's police blotter? What is the difference if somebody hears about it in real time, or after the fact on Patch or some other social media site?

Good point. Don't know. The things I see printed are usually DUI, vandalism, and theft. Suicide attempt or heart attack would be more of a medical emergency. I don't know if those things get printed or not.

www.radioman911.com is a website with several connections to many different broadcasts. Listening to the Chicago Citywide after the Cubs World Series Championship or when there were conferences with lots of protests was good listening while doing other things.
