Dan Bernstein from 2006-2018: Look at how SMART MLB teams have gotten. They know now it's stupid to give a 30 year old free agent big, long-term money.

Dan Bernstein in 2019: WHY ARE MLB TEAMS COLLUDING AGAINST 30 YEAR OLD FREE AGENTS?!?!? This is (no joke) "shadow collusion".

I would never have guessed Dan saying that (the second part).

Parkins is the only one on record saying he'll be disappointed if the Cubs don't make a push for Harper or Machado.

If the Cubs sign Harper or Machado, wouldn't their payroll be around $250M (assuming no other major changes)?

What is the tax penalty and who is paying it?

Two teams paid the luxury tax last year (the lowest number in 15 years).

Red Sox: $239.5 million payroll ($11.95 million luxury tax bill)

Nationals: $205 million payroll ($2.39 million luxury tax bill).

It's not a drop in the bucket (at least in the Red Sox case) but it certainly isn't a franchise crippling number the shitfuck owners would like you to believe it is either.

Doesn't it double and then triple if you do it in consecutive years?

It goes from 20% to 30% in year 2 and 50% in year 3. So 29 teams have no excuses.

It is funny to see how many "woke" sports people beat us over the head about sabermetrics and now front offices are using stats to screw over paying dominant players.

This is why I always hated the Heyward contract. The balance tax is so punative that a team would be stupid to pay it especially as the penalty rises in subsequent years.

Parkins should have made a sign, and displayed it at the Rate when Machado was in town with Baltimore, to show Manny how much the city
wants Machado on the North side......oh wait, ooopppsss...Shocked that didn't help seal the deal..
