That is true. Even today, there are assholes who mock those who served. Even people that do not understand that what they sometimes say to veterans is insulting. The thing that was unique, I think, to the Vietnam war and probably not any other war that the US has ever fought, is the personal insults given to the men and women who served there. I may be wrong. Have you guys who served in Iraq and elsewhere been treated pretty good generally after you returned? Personally, I think that you fellows in some ways had a worse course than my generation did and that was because of the multiple combat deployments encountered.

I will say, though, that I think that you were much better equipped and trained than we were. Our officers for the most part over there were shit and were untrained themselves as were many of the sergeants and staff sergeants. We basically were left to a kind of OJT. The smart ones of us latched onto the guys who were in the shit the longest on how to survive and who to listen to, and not who had the highest ranks.
