I was listening to a podcast about language the other day. They talked about the term "curry favor". The term came from a French poem about a vain horse named Fauvel. Curry Fauvel. It later evolved to "favor" as people forgot the horse and it made sense that the phrase was suggesting that one was attempting to gain favor.
