The board is at an odd size. It's not growing enough to drown out some of the old factions, but it's too big to just turn it into a closed must-refer site.

Its nominal primary topic (sports radio) is a declining topic, and it's secondary topic (Chicago teams) is a topic for emphatic ball-busting. The radio wars are over and the entire medium is going to shit. There was a flurry of activity when DeCastro came to 670 and started whacking people to prove that The Game was actually a good idea, but that was a year ago and now nobody cares. There may be another flurry when the Cubs TV station launches and David Kaplan leaves WMVP, but the Sinclair-WGN fuck-up has made even that more tenuous. At least two of the five major teams in Chicago are headed to the shitter, three if you're either a fierce Cub or fierce White Sox fan. And unlike Jason Goff, most people here really don't give a shit if Anthony Davis gets traded to the Lakers or the Celtics.

Instead, there is too much fucking talk about off-topic items. There will always be some and there needs to be a place for it. Any large message board has them, I'm thinking about the old 2+2 poker forums which I stopped visiting when I gave up poker and Flyertalk where I've been a member for 20 years and there is a massive off-topic section I gave up on probably 5-6 years ago. The problem was that too many people were there primary for the off-topic stuff, and the namecalling makes this place look like a bunch of squabling nine year olds.

Meanwhile, message boards in general are falling victim to the general lack of civility that has overtaken society, now that every village idiot from every two buck town finds five more idiots on social media and mistakes that for validation of their dumbassness. I'd argue that this place has about the right percentage of village idiots as any community of its size, but we've empowered the idiots to think they are not idiots.

So gaining new blood is going to be difficult. [No, mults don't count.] And the current membership has so many factions that I need somebody to make me a diagram of which posters want which other posters to die. I can't keep track of any of it.

I'm of an age where I'm too old for Discord. And I was active in the very first incarnation of what eventually became IRC, back when it was only hosted on about 75 university mainframes in the entire world and was still mostly about getting pussy, so it's not like I don't understand the concept. It's like trying to read the fucking Clash Royale timeline when some guys who don't speak English wander through for an hour. You can't have a season-long argument about Jose Quintana on Discord.

But I like this place because I like to be able to take my time and write mostly civil posts about a variety of things, find better baseball fans than most places on the Internet (even JORR and his quaint old school reliance on pitcher wins), and occasionally meet some interesting people.

This has to be a place for Chicago sports and sports media. The uncivil off topic stuff needs to be scaled back somehow. Moving it out of the active threads search has helped a lot.

The hatred between posters.... I don't know. That might be too late to fix.

I don't think it is necessary to have pages-long name-calling contests and people getting incredibly personal or posters who just follow others around harassing them, but I also disagree with the idea that this needs to be a completely civil place where we all have tea and polite conversation. This board THRIVES on drama. Think of every memorrable day in board history. It all involved drama. That's what this board is. It's a male soap opera. There are other places on the internet that are more polite.

And as far as ignorance, this place isn't close to other forms of social media. Yeah, we all disagree with opinions, and some of them seem laughable to others, but those are rare... and they are common on things like Twitter. If Hatchetman were calling Trump the antichrist in Twitter, he would just be another crazy Twitter user. But here, at least it's out of the ordinary. Also, posters here are more informed on things than your average social media user.

This board is pretty mild compared to some of the other boards I’ve frequented in terms of ‘personal’ attacks. SD’s OT for many years was one of the more rambunctious places I’ve spent internet time on (I won’t even count the Offshoots lol). The ‘Misc’ over on the BodyBuilders.com is another one.. or was -not sure how it is now as so many regulars have caught the hammer.


I dig this place as a secondary smaller forum to switch things up and talk about things local to me that are sports related that I don’t bother discussing on SD. The smaller community makes it a little harder at 1st to be a trusted ‘outsider’ who isn’t really a gimmick of some poster from the past.. but I think most of you that post with me in the Bears section that thought I was someone else have moved on from that. This board will most likely always remain small because it isn’t promoted and it’s specific to local interests. But, it does have a long standing decently close knit ‘community’, and that is actually a pretty important dynamic to keeping people coming back. So, I wouldn’t undervalue that if I were some of you long time regulars here. Also, rivalries on message boards in my experience produce some of the most entertaining portions of forum dwelling.. so those are also vital to a message board too. I embrace that sort of thing, as long as it doesn’t get too out of control with PiP’s/Backtraces and shit like that.


Anyways, I still consider myself a bit of an outsider on this board because I don’t spend much time here like some of you do. So, that’s my sort of outside looking in perspective on this place for what it’s worth. Which in short -I dig this place, and hope it’s around for many years to come.
