I was one of the "essential" folks at work today. I've had the Outside plant tour this week M-W, so three to five hours of walking around checking equipment, taking logs, etc. Today they waved about half of the non-critical readings, but required me to have a second person along just in case. Great way to reduce our exposure?

I saw news video of Chicago today, looked sunny and clear, we were buried in clouds and lake effect all day, so we only got down to -17, but it was flat out raw right on the beach. The old Honda really groaned to start after 13 hours in the lot.

We're fighting cold conditions throughout the plant and 31F lake water to keep things stable, hopefully the warm weather will get here soon.

told my walking buddy that I couldn't get the chorus of this song out of my head..https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CinJuVtdp3Y

The temperature was underwhelming today. I thought it'd be miserable but I was outside 4 times today for ~20 minutes and could've stayed out longer if I hadn't reached my destination.

If people dressed appropriately there wouldn't be an issue.

Two of my coworkers that were in Wisconsin and Minnesota had their windshields spontaneously crack - one wasn’t even in motion.

Agree.. I couldn't tell ya when but I was working nights (7- twelves) sometime betwee 2006- 12 on the Southeast side and it literally hurt to breathe.. I thought my lungs might freeze on the 4 block walk..coldest I've ever been in my life.

Ground is gonna be rock-solid after days of never making it over zero, snow's gonna melt and have nowhere to get absorbed, floods ahoy.

Rain water will have plenty of potholes to sit in as this extreme change in temperature is going to create potholes

-25 degrees on the trip in this morning. Taking the garbage and recycling out to the curb wasn't too bad. I ran out to my detached garage
this morning in a sleeveless undershirt to get the car warmed up and that was invigorating. Should almost get up to 0 degrees today so that
will feel pretty good.

Rain for 3 days a coupe days of snow and back down to 0. That should do some damage.

We are predicting quite a bit of damage. That's proprietary information, folks.

Started off at -28 but no wind made a difference. A balmy -12 now. Shorts weather!

And as soon as wind chill advisory expires at noon we have a winter storm warning. It is dry snow at least.

Come on guys. There’s no such thing as wind chill.

Metra was struggling this morning. The 8.01 showed up at 8.21. Two train cars were closed off b/c the entrance doors wouldn't close. The poor conductor had to stand in the exposed middle section to ensure no passengers tried to enter those cars.

Between walking the dog to daycare and standing on the platform I was outside for 50 minutes. Only body part that ended up cold were the toes. Totally my fault for not wearing the right socks.

Oh, and I don't know the science behind this but it's interesting how the sounds of planes change in this cold.

I think its something to do with the cold air and the sound waves. Like how an ambulance/fire truck siren sounds different after it passes you.

I was talking about the board hardasses saying wind chill was a myth. Not you.

If there is one guy who understands wind chill it’s the guy who lived in Montana.

In the winter of 98/99 I had a job with the USDA/state of Montana doing a research project on how cattle use micro climes in winter. Ever 2 hours I had to get out of my old Air Force surplus suburban and walk to four locations in 4 paddocks and measure wind speed, temperature and cow location. Also, had to write down what the cows did throughout the day. It was riveting

I learned a few thingsfrom this job. Real boots matter. Schnee’s pack boots are wonderful. Carhart arctic wear is a god send. Windchill is for damn real and even cows know to get the fuck out of the wind. Finally, the government spends money on really stupid projects.
