Anybody see the episode with Dan Bernstein many years ago? I saw it but don't recall the restaurant he chose. The one with State Senator Obama is kind of cool to see as well.

Gene & Georgetti.

I think the Obama episode was one that they didn't use for some reason and then they released it as a special after he became president.

Yes. I am confusing it with a Julian Lennon song.

seriously, Max & Benny's? I bet it gets ripped, it's average at best at every turn.

If some show is giving you unfettered ability to try any restaurant on their dime, what kind of fool chooses a deli?

I'm 99% sure the people who go on Check Please pay their own way at all 3 restaurants they have to go to.

Does Check, Please! pay for the meal? I never got that sense.

It's PBS. They don't have any money. Believe me.

My guess is a producer calls the restaurant in advance and sets up a blind free meal for the guests and camera interviews.

no, no, no. First off, the guest doesn't go the same day the cameras are there. The cameras come in AFTER the guests have already been there, that way the restaurant won't know in advance that they have been selected. And the guests definitely have to pay.

What chump would pay to provide content for a hit tv show?

What is the attraction to be on the show as a contributor if you are not getting the meals for free? If that is true, it puts the contributors into a whole different light, including (and maybe especially) Bernstein.

I think they are reimbursed for the value of one meal by the show. I know the restaurants do not pay.

This is from the Check Please! Arizona FAQ - Guest reviewers pay for their own meals. We provide a modest stipend in the mail a few weeks after the program taping. I'd assume it's a similar deal in Chicago.

So the guests are people so desperate for attention that they are willing to pay their own weigh to restaurants one of which they will undoubtedly not like just to spout some half baked gourmand expertise.

To me, that was always the most fascinating part. You get some dude that wants to turn people on to the great sandwich place for $12/meal and, in turn, some Dr. Ken-like snob makes him go to some asshole-centric steak house for $125/plate.

Had a bad experience the only time I ate there. Corned Beef sandwich was something like $15 and I needed to slather a ton of mustard because it was a lot of meat and not very flavorful. You aren't kidding about old people either.

No, he picked the now closed Dixie Kitchen. Others have come behind him and given Valois the Obama connections.

And when it first ran, many said that he talked over the other guests.

You are right, I remember this now.

Me and my old lady ate at The Promontory on Monday. Cool place but were both racking our brains trying to figure out what was in that spot before, if anything.

It used to be a Barnes and noble bookstore..(Promontory building)

And before that, a parking lot/sitting area.

None of it made business sense since Hyde Parkers couldn't support the Kroch & Brentanos that used to be across 53rd St. Or any bookstore not on 57th.

Haven't watched the episode from last evening yet but I'm looking forward to it.

I tape it on Friday night and watch while I'm eating lunch on Saturday or Sunday. Watching it always makes me hungry so I kill two birds with one stone.

I also tape "Jay's Chicago" and watch them back to back. Good, laid back and relaxing stuff. Off the beaten path and interesting stories that somehow draw me in.

was not surprised to see the other two completely unimpressed by Max and Benny's. My favorite part was when that Caller Bob tried to twist their words and say that she was glad to see M&B holds up to New York delis and both of them were like, uhm no, that's not at all what we said.

And what really pissed me off was that the blond chick went to the dude's restaurant for brunch. I fucking hate that when people on this show go for brunch instead of going for dinner when the place is obviously more of a dinner place. Why the fuck would you go for brunch to a French brasserie? It's obviously a dinner place.

Only thing that upsets me more is when people back down from their opinions and chalk it up to "must've been a bad night for the restaurant". Hate that so much. Thankfully no one pulled that cop out last night.

Yeah, Alpana has the hate and negativity working again. That's what makes the show.

Thankfully Jay 's Chicago saved the night. None of the places on Check Please seemed to be worth a visit.

Her sister (Molly Yeh) has a show not worth your time. And has appeared on multiple episodes of the Best Of shows to be promoted as a celebrity.

 Just watched. She was annoying the whole table.

I liked the Chicago sports cookies at Max & Benny's. Those looked pretty good!

The old guy gave a few choice eyerolls.

How about Check Please Chicago-to-Arizona and it's just a thirty-minute rant about single-serving barbecue sauce cups.

Her job was “culinary analyst”. I never heard of that before but apparently it’s a real thing. Kind of like when I watched the Fyre documentary and the girl was an “influencer”. I know I’m old and out of touch but that sounds like a load of b.s.

Just noticed the blond lady was a “policy and philanthropy consultant”. I felt bad for the old man.

I was thinking the same thing. And the blonde was almost as annoying as Miss Max & Benny's
