I posted something in an audiophile sub-reddit for advice on getting a vintage Sansui amp re-capped and fixed a couple weeks ago.
Out of the blue, this dude contacts me offering to buy mine because it was the "last piece missing" in his dream set-up.
I knew it was going to be costly for me to have fixed, but I wasn't even trying to sell it to begin with. so I told him to make me an offer if he really wanted this particular piece and I kinda want something else anyway.
It weighs 30 lbs and doesn't really fit in normal boxes, and shipping it to New Jersey was going to cost me at least $55.
Dude tells me he doesn't want to pay for shipping, but if I accepted his lowball offer, he could paypal me the money today.
By the time I had a chance to check my email, he sends me a message to tell me he bought a completely different amp in the span of an afternoon. It was just a hassle and I'm irritated that I didn't even get the chance to tell him to go fuck himself.
:x

I don't own a soldering iron....or have any electrical engineering expertise whatsoever.
Maybe I could just drive it to Frank's house and have him fix it.
He seemed like a solid guy that one time I bowled with him like 10 years ago...

You're like a big soft wheel of baby Swiss Wisconsin cheese. Toughen up ya big pussy, you're a disgrace to white men.

I have no distinction between the counties up north ya filthy Caller Bob. You're a dirty brood, Wisconsin, McHenry county, Rockford. Makes lil difference.. you're a shitbag with no street smarts and little book smarts.. your musical - film selection alone should be enough to toss your creepy ass in prison for life.

I'm no genius but I think he making a play on "I'm sorry this happened to you" which seems to be a fairly common response when people post shit like this.

I'm with Brick here, why don't more people say "I'm glad this happened to you"? Sympathy getters!!!!

Post the model number of your receiver and what's wrong with it. If the inside of the amp doesn't look like a PC motherboard, I can likely get it working. Pics would be helpful.

Are you going to murder shirtless driver? I mean, it's cool, I just like a little closure when people disappear from the board.

Nope, I like Shirtless Driver.
I also like working on old tube amps. I've built several of my own tube guitar amps.
If his amp is simple enough to where it's replacing filter caps or tubes, I'd be happy to do that for him.

Sansui AU-7500. It's not a tube amp, it's a S/S (integrated?).
I haven't even as much as unscrewed the cover from the chassis, but long story short -
it worked just fine until one day it just didn't. It stopped working before I moved, so it wasn't like it fell off the truck.
It's an early 70's model, and I've read that this is fairly typical. The guy I called in Antioch was a total asshole who
told me it would cost $50 to even have it on his bench, and then $300-$500 to maybe/probably re-cap it.Gish
I basically inherited it with some other 70's hi-fi gear when my wife's step-dad passed, and I'd like to keep it, but I honestly on;t have a deep personal attachment to the stuff. I guess it's pretty labor intensive, which is why it costs so much to rehab vintage gear like this.
I have no idea what kind of mojo you might have, but if you want to continue this conversation in PM, I'm listening. Thank you, I know we've discussed some music stuff before privately. The "Gish" snare drum sound IIRC....

P.S. - Why the fuck does Telegram Sam want me dead.................

I'm afraid this might be beyond something I'd have time to do. While re-capping it would be something you'd WANT to do, I doubt that would be the cause for it suddenly not working. Suddenly not working would have more to do with a blown fuse or a transistor frying out. Capacitors have more of a noticeable, gradual death. You can tell capacitors are going out as they introduce noise / hum the the output.

This made for an interesting step by step of how to trouble shoot. I think if I was retired and had time on my hands, this would be really fun to work on, but that's not the case.

FYI...this kind of shows ow in depth the trouble shooting can go. I'd be really nervous getting it ripped apart that much.

Oh, no doubt.
I understand why it's such a niche market.
Oh well, the original 'asshole from reddit' posted earlier this week that once again he's ISO a Sansui AU-7500.
I replied... "I still have mine, but I thought you were going in a different direction".
I'll see if I can sell it down the line and am currently looking at a Denon AVR-S640H.
My 'guy' gave it rave reviews.
