Specifically, old people who think a little bit of intolerance at a few universities around the country means that all college students are against free speech.

Just because Ben Shapiro didn't speak at DePaul or GCU, it doesn't mean young people lack independent thought and critical thinking skills. Get fucking real.

I was on UIUC’s campus back in 1992 as a college freshman. There was a religious oriented guy who would preach on the quad. I stopped and listened a few times. He would praise the 43 Republicans in the Senate. I wondered aloud if that included Bob Packwood who had been accused of abusing 19 women. In any case, they allowed all sorts of weirdos to speak there.

On UIC’s campus, I resided at some point after the Contract with American. A TA in a history class complained about the “deregulation” of highway speed limits and how some flat tax plan would rape the poor. I raised my hand and reminded him that the plan had a standard deduction that would shield the first $36,000 of income from tax, and thus being a large tax cut to the lower income folks.

It was the last time he editorialized in that class.

A psych TA, who looked like a thinner version of Monica Lewinski, apparently disliked Clinton. She told a few jokes about Slick Willie. The one I recall went like this- the Clinton tax plan is just two lines. On the top line, enter your income. On line two it says to send the amount on line one to Washington.

Yeah it’s good that college students riot when speakers they don’t like visit. What inspired this brilliant post?

Some of them are clearly against free speech, but perhaps the larger problem is that people think one way but either won't admit it or will even lie about it. Weird social pressure. But that's always existed, or at least has since 1860 or whenever it was that JS Mill wrote about it. The fact that people make up their own evidence or stay blind to credible evidence doesn't help, and that might be the underlying problem. People do this on every side of every huge debate, it seems: birtherism, crazy liberal idiots calling everyone racist, the Church, feminists...

Is there a topic that is untouched by the nutty, who have no respect for evidence and supportable claims?

I understand that free speech can be used for propaganda (in the bad meanings of the word), and there probably are even more challenges to arguing against it today than there were in the South in the sixties.

Gentleman sitting next to us at a restaurant said young kids today aren't open minded. This jackass had an answer for everything. He was solving all the world's problems.

Saying young kids aren't open-minded is . . . not open-minded, isn't it? I hate when I say stuff like that.

I wonder who looks better naked: Ron Wolfley the poster or Ron Wolfley the former player?

Well, it's a thorny issue that a lot of white nationalists have savvily rebranded themselves as "free speech advocates." How do you diametrically oppose yourself to that? They may as well start calling themselves "oxygen enthusiasts." More importantly, how do we on the left reclaim the primacy of free speech in America in a way that, for once, isn't about some race-science cretin like Stefan Molyneux losing out on gigs?

Denied. These soft kuntz hypersensitive bitches, comedians don't even play on these campuses anymore.

Yeah let’s get rid of free speech. They are all “white nationalists”. Race cretins have acendency on one side these days.

Willful misreading of my post. I said we can't get rid of free speech, we just can't allow the issue to be hijacked by reactionaries who want paid speaking engagements.

There's a pretty easy solution. Stop trying to get them banned from speaking. Then they wouldn't talk about free speech.

PCU came out in the 94? This is generally nothing new under the sun. I can see security concerns and citing those issues to keep the circuses off campus. But rarely is that the reason these are unwanted.

The funny thing is they probably rolled their eyes at their parents generation that thought the same things but this time it is clearly different.

What would you call dismissing that a speaker was not allowed to talk because of the threat of protests or riots? You can say that it's not most college students doing this, and I will certainly agree with you. But there have been too many places shut down by this type of behavior to say this no big deal or this is not seeping into the culture.

Look at the hysteria during the last Supreme Court confirmation.

Well, think about this. Jerry Seinfeld has said he will not do any speaking/shows on college campuses due to the climate. Think about that.

I have thought about that Chassodatop. It's a sad state of affairs for comedy but it doesnt change anything about what I wrote.

Most college kids weren't even born when Seinfeld went off the air. I doubt he was going to be doing a lot of shows on college campuses anyways.

True when a mild level comic like that is afraid to work those places. That should scare you. I think it is good for the kids to be passionate about stuff but wasn't part of the college "experience" to open yourself to new ideas and experiences? Seems all they want now is things that fit with their current world view. Add into the fact that most of them have been coddled ost of their lives,ie the trophy for everyone shit, is it no wonder that they are more prone to throwing temper tantrums?

It is the point. I'd be much more concerned if comics who should be going after that crowd are avoiding them rather than a guy who walks into Las Vegas whenever he wants and makes a million dollars in a week.

Yeah I've always loved the Seinfeld talking point from free speech activists. He probably hasn't even considered doing a college show for decades now for purely economic reasons.
