Don’t know they didn’t show what Roland saw but we can assume he was being legit. That being said doesn’t mean it’s always there. You have to assume it plays some part because Wayne’s memory is already established as unreliable we don’t need to be brown beaten with that fact.

Might want to rephrase that last sentence...especially when referencing Wayne.

Could have referenced black prison rape instead?

That’s one of my better auto corrects.

Finally saw latest episode last night. One of the better episodes and the last 15 minutes were really interesting. Can't wait for the final 2 episodes.

Yeah let’s see if Nic can close this out strong. I think aside from trying too hard to do something different in season two his biggest flaw is on delivery, not setup. Let’s see what he delivers. I’ve enjoyed this season not an all time fav but just fine. Let’s see him bring it home.

Purple Hays really doesn’t do much for me. Roland West is carrying this show like 2001 Iverson.

Dorff came to work on this show. Yeah old Hays is great honestly. He has more range. Younger hays purposely doesn’t have range so it isn’t like it’s a bad acting job it’s just that character is one note.

Yeah I know Hays is a very good actor. His character seems like a writers failure to me.

Michael Rooker was shown as the older Hoyt on Sunday's episode and he'll be showing up in the last 2 episodes.

Agree with Lawyer about Dorff. He's killing it.

Season 2 had too many characters and too many plot threads. Returning to a 2 detective focus plus a significant other is a good formula.

Neither of these guys seem like good detectives, hope the show gets better. It's been Meh.

This.

As we get toward the end I find myself caring less and less whodunit.

I give the season a B-/C+ so far.

No it’s been great.

The only difference between this season and season 1 is Alexandra Daddario’s tits. That’s about it.

A/A-

I don't care about the mystery really. It's been interesting as a device for Hays and West across 3 decades of interaction and friendship but it's secondary for me.

Solid B+/A- for me.

I agree to a point. Ignoring the abortion that was Season 2, the show is about the relationships between the detectives rather than about the crimes they are investigating. However, I hope this season doesn't just slop out the ending to the mystery like Season 1 did.

I'm not someone who needs closure. The only part of "Pine Barrens" that I liked is that it was never discussed again. And then there's the ending of The Leftovers and The Sopranos. While I think the answers are there for those who want them, the way those shows ended was perfect. But the first season of True Detective spent the whole season teasing all this weird stuff and then just ended like a typical network cop procedural. That sucked. This season doesn't really have all that purposeful weirdness so I'm not expecting as much.

Agreed about season 1. The last 2 episodes ruined that season for me.

This season I went in with low expectations and knowing not to get too caught up in any crazy conspiracy mystery. That's made it easier to enjoy this season.

So far as I can tell, the mystery of season 3 isn't the case. The mystery is these two detectives. I hammered the series for 4 episodes based on a false premise. I can still hammer the case, it's boiler plate uninteresting, but I know now the case is ancillary, it's just a mode of transportation to the real story.

Season 3 hasn’t even finished yet.

Why are we grading it?

If you type up a 10 page thesis paper, and the first 5 pages are quotes from memes and gibberish, you probably don't need to wait for the last 5 pages to grade it.

The problem with this season and season 1 is that they just go off in too many directions. There are too many potential killers and odd conspiracies. There is a lot of good acting and interesting interpersonal relationships. But the show is supposedly about solving a case. And if they come up with another warped ending like season 1, then it ruins the ride. At some level, the viewers should be given enough clues to come up with plausible explanations. In this season, there are just too many things going on to feel confident about them wrapping up neatly in a Seven esque ending.

I am still enjoying kind of like Peeps said above. I know the ending will disappoint and have low expectations.

Yup - in this case, the final episode looks like it won’t be anticlimactic, as there are still plenty of loose ends to tie up.

Hell of a place to end the episode.

Another solid episode.

Hays and West are great. Another possible tie in to season 1 as well.

The Pine Barrens was the funniest episode The Sopranos ever produced. Fuck.

For about 5 minutes while watching the last episode, I thought the ultimate reveal would be that Hays' son and the journalist were connected to the Hoyt family in some way. Like they are preying on Hays' inability to remember for their own nefarious purposes because what the fuck else purpose do they serve?

Was it just me or did some of the episode music/stingers have an early X-Files feel?

Did Wayne exchange his silence for an answer in 90?

If so did he ever tell Roland?

I def think Wayne traded his silence for the safety of his family first, and maybe a partial answer second.

Roland’s intentions in 2015 are still a question for me, and I really want to know what happened to them in 1990 after Roland freaks out about shooting Harris James. Also, how did old man Hoyt know about James being killed the day after when Wayne and Roland are the only two who were there?

I’ve been reading this sub for half the season to get more of a true detective fix.
