No, my point was you pay what he is asking plus a little more to play for your sorry as excuse for a team.

You go get what you really want. Ryan Pace did it for his franchise QB. You don't sit back and hope he signs for less then what he is asking for.

This is the biggest contract in North American professional sports and now you are saying they should have gone above that in a league where not a single contract similar to this has ever been considered a good one?

I know he signed with the Padres. It is ok Frank. Let your frustration out. I would be pissed if my team failed at #rebuilding

The thing that’s great about this is the same defense of Theo / Ricketts that would be occurring from Rick and Frank if the Cubs lost out on this .

Look to the Padres if you want to see how I thought the Sox should have approached Machado.

To be fair, Machado was not going to bring them a championship. Just a little bit of hope on the south side. Sox knew this and hope was not worth 300MIL/10yrs. Not when they have Eloy as a back up plan.

This puts all kinds of pressure on the kids to not only win but have to be near superstars almost immediately.

If they signed a superstar, they would have all had time to be something while in his shadow.

Just go all-in on him now.

Machado was step 2.
Machado + Eloy + Kopech puts you in a really nice position to be very good for a long time.

right now NO Machado puts you right back at the bottom.

The crying poor and shocked is ridiculous. They better have a back-up plan.

The Cubs didn't even try for either of these guys. I don't think the Cubs are cheap. I was one of the few people on here pointing out how the doubling of the payroll was the major reason they won the World Series when everyone else was pretending they were the Tampa Bay Rays.

The difference is I can admit Theo/Ricketts messed up with the Heyward,Darvish,Chatwood contracts and are costing us Harper.

Payroll would have still be in the lower 1/3 of the league even with this contract.

Don't fucking defend them. Just don't.

Agreed. Shameful how frank and peeps immediately start carrying water for the FO and Jerry right after this was announced. No Sox fan should feel good about this news. It’s pathetic.

YOU are the one who started a thread saying 'burn the organization to the ground....but I'll still go to the park and give JERRY my money if I get a free or a dirt cheap ticket.'

I know you might not be used to balls bouncing off of your nose gd, but you're playing the part well today.

I do not fault the Cubs in the least for not wanting to commit that amount of money to just one player.

You are really going to fault him for not wanting to pay $30million for one guy for each of the next ten seasons?

There are MANY things you can get a Jerry for, and it sucks that Manny is not on the White Sox, but I'm not going to fault the Sox for failing to pony up over a quarter of a billion dollars for one player...regardless of how good he is.

You are a loser fan with a loser attitude who will be happy with a loser team. Enjoy your rebuild that will result in a team that never will be as talented as the one they broke up. Oh, but JR got to pocket a shit ton of money with a low payroll.

So you want them to go back to the latter part of the Kenny Williams era and starting throwing around money like its nothing? What did the Sox win when they signed Dunn, Melky, David Robertson, and guys ilke that? Unless I missed something crazy, #2005 is the hashtag I see around here from Sox fans.

I don't "feel good" about this, but I am not going to fault any team for not handing a ten year contract.

Again, if you guys want to jump ship then go ahead and do it. You have ever reason to at this point. But don't half ass it, and don't chide the real fans who make the choice to stick with their team.

This is still the Kenny Williams era and they’ve never come close to signing a player as good as Machado (and never will) so it wouldn’t be going back to anything.

This does feel like A-Rod to Texas. I bet the Padres dump him after eating a ton of the contract to New York or Boston to get out from under it in a few years.

I'm surprised he's getting this money when the Cubs, Yankees, Dodgers, Nationals, etc were all not even in the running. I guess the collusion talk was all bullshit (which we knew already).

John Heyman as recently as this morning said Machado didn't want to go to San Diego, as it's "another world" from Miami. I guess he'll be joining another Miami guy (Eric Hosmer). It's all about the $$$.

Nobody gives a fuck about the last 3-4 years of the contract if he helps you win a world series during the first 6-7 years of it.

Heyward and Darvish were hardly the best OF/Pitcher on their teams, let alone one of the best players in the league, and look at what those contracts have done for the Cubs in all this.
