You are going to be the fool believing they will go in on Arrenado next year, then some other person the year after.

A player of his ability, at his age has a high value. That value should have been even higher to the Sox.

He would have been a symbol of the rebuild. Now he is a symbol of management's failure.

Hell, Arrenado is talking extension with the Rockies.

Maybe they can get Trout.

No he isn't.

You're irrationally angry about this for some reason. Probably because you bought into this from the start whereas most fans knew this wasn't gonna happen unless there was a miracle.

Don't get pissed because you bought into the hype.

It was reasonable to buy into it. It was available to them.

Normally it wasn't going to happen because the Yankees, Dodgers, etc. are all in on a guy. Not here. The Sox lost because they chose to lose this one...and you applaud them for it.

Some fan base here.

I didn't applaud them for anything.

As I said many times, they made an offer (thought to be 8 years for between 225 and 250 million) and that wasnt enough. At that point if the guy doesn't want to come here then fuck him.

You’re definitely applauding this news.

SHOW. ME. WHERE. I. APPLAUDED. THIS. NEWS.

Don Corleone the mother fucker!

They have literally been gearing up for this moment for years. I remember reading an article from the winter meetings when the Sale trade went down that all of these moves were made with an eye on free agency 2019. All that planning and all those years of saving came down to this moment...and they failed.

Fuck every last one of these dickheads. Every last one of them.

This was the ONE time none of the big boys were on the biggest FA. You stated years ago that you were gearing up for this moment. The opportunity will never present itself again...and you blew it.

Don't ask for my allegiance. Don't ask for my patience. You don't have it anymore.

Only time I'll be going is free tickets or five dollar cheap seats because I know that place is going to be a morgue for the next few years.

JR, you have absolutely ripped the heart out of this fanbase since the day you purchased. You have been a scourge on us. Now, as you are dying, you add one last insult.

Yeah, 2005 really sucked for me as a Sox fan.

Maybe that's the problem.

You believed they knew what they were doing and had an actual plan.

At least I understand your perspective now: I was a fool to have hope and expectations

I don't like the perspective but it certainly is much closer to reality than mine

Yeah, it's a funny thing. Here's where I am on it. I'm angry that they didn't sign him. But I think I would have been angry if they had signed him. I know that sounds weird. But it's sort of like eating White Castle or doing coke. You want it bad before you do it, but there's a lot of regret after you do.
As a neutral observer, a contract like this has NEVER been a good deal for the team in the history of baseball. Literally never. There isn't one example right now where you say "if it works out like that one, I will be happy".

Now, add in the fact the White Sox would have had to beat that offer and make it even more unlikely to succeed.

You are arguing the wrong point. They had already made the threshold decision to offer that type of contract. You should have been decrying THAT decision.

I'm not sure they made the threshold decision to "offer that type of contract." When "that type of contract" was a 10 year deal at 30 million dollars a year. They allegedly offered 7 years at 25 million. There's a quite a difference between $175 million and $300 million.

Also, if this team wins it's going to be because of the play of young core, not because of Machado. Similarly, if it loses it's going to be because of the play of the young core, not because it failed to sign Machado.

The "alleged" offers were all over the place. I can show you allegations of them being in the upper 200s.

The young core would have been aided by having Machado. However, it is silly to think he would not be a big reason for winning if they won with him.

Machado wanted to be on the East Coast, preferably with the Yankees since the Marlins are perpetual suck. No team in the eastern time zone wanted him for 7+ years.

He doesn't even want to be in San Diego. It is a place to chill out until the Padres can trade him to the Yankees in a couple of years.

Conversely, Harper doesn't really want to play in Philly, where he will always be compared to local boy Mike Trout. Offer Harper the deal you offered Machado and see what happens.

He's just one guy. It's a baseball team. If they signed him and they won, the collective contributions of the core young players would have outweighed his impact by a wide margin. If they acquired the right young players, they'll be fine regardless of the Machado situation. If they didn't acquire the right young players, they would be screwed even if they signed him.

Us fans are conditioned to think this only because the MLBPA agreed to such an exploitative rookie wage scale.

What if they acquired the right young players and it still wasn't enough, because that is the situation I foresee.

If they acquired the right young players, they won't need a Machado level addition to be a perennial playoff team. They'll probably need to add some veterans here and there, but they will not need to add a guy at 10 years 300 million.

of course they do. A Manny Machado makes every team better and the Sox could have had him without upsetting payroll.

25 million per year is too much for the White Sox.

Though it likely never even got to that point since the fucking White Sox couldn't be bothered to call Harper or Boras.

But they would've listened if they had called.

The fucking White Sox act like the prom queen when they're the fat loser that is everyone's last resort.

They're Julie Dicaro.

I don’t even care that we have a lot of OF’s coming up. If Robert is as good as some thing find a spot or get a great piece for a contending team Harper helped lead you to. I even give credence to the notion he’s overrated but that contract isn’t gonna he as bad as many think on the backend most likely and it’s just further evidence the Sox aren’t even trying. Let’s meet against this time next year for the same song and dance after another 70 or less win season.

I said it before that Harper is the one the Sox should have been going "all in" to sign.

25MIL a year and no opt outs is a perfect fit for the White Sox.
