Im not in the tax bracket that MJH are in but the tipping standards of 15% is a sore subject with me. If i receive great service I will reward a server with a 20 to 25% gratuity and this might come as a shock for some but if the food or service is below par, I let the server know why I did not tip the standard 15%.

I once had a waitress who WAS only serving us drinks at Melvin B's in the city and she literally walk down the street after me because I only left a $14 dollar tip on a $100 tab. I said to her "You have to be fucking kidding me , right? " Her reply was , Standard is 15% . I said to her that for coming down the street and embarrassing me in front of my friends I wanted the $14 dollar tip back and she pulled it out and threw the money back at me. Needless to say I made the walk over to the bar to inform her boss what a Caller Bob she was and what she did. My full bar tab was comped and the girl was let go on the spot.

So you got a girl fired because YOU were to cheap to fork over an extra dollar.

I'm not sure what's more appalling, your inability to part with an extra dollar, or your reaction when she called you on it.

Yeah most people dont let people just walk all over them. Maybe you do?

My friends from work and I usually go to Buffalo Wild Wings after work if a Cubs game is on. Well there is a waitress there that starts out great all the time bringing us beer and food quickly. After about 2 beers she fucking forgets about us to the point where we have to call a manager over to get her back. I dont tip her shit, and no I try to sit at the bar itself to avoid her slow A D D ass.

I'm surprised at how many people still hold on to the 15% number. I thought generally accepted practice is now 18-20% on the total bill. I put that on whatever is the bottom number on the bill, which usually is the total bill, including taxes.

Coast,
I'd just assume make it 20% across the board, but unfortunately, I get below average service more often than I got above average service. I know it's a shitty job, but there's lots of shitty jobs that pay a lot less.

Subracting out taxes and figuring the subtotal without taxes (when it is not readily apparent on a bill) sounds like needless math to shave a server out of a few cents.
Both amounts are equally and clearly visible on the check...it's not extra effort. They're tipped on the product/service, not the product / service + government contribution.

Does your tip percentage get adjusted if your bill includes an expensive bottle of wine? Obviously this can greatly elevate the total bill without much additional effort on the servers part.

Yes, by industry standard the tip on a bottle of wine or champagne is only 10%.

I've always been a really good tipper because I think a lot of servers don't like serving younger people because they think they'll get screwed. I think the worst tip I've ever given (which was two nights ago) was 15%, but that was because the guy wouldn't quit talking to us.

I've got a buddy who does "bartending" (just pretty much pouring beers) on one of the rooftops for Wrigley. He said that they had a group of about 100 lawyers about three or four weeks back. The drinks are free when you rent out the rooftop. He made $14 in tips.

What I learned from my old man for one of those outings, the best thing to do is meet the bartender, shake hands, learn his name whatever - drop a 20 in the jar at the beginning of the night and you'll never have to wait in line again.

That was my Las Vegas strategy. The first cocktail waitress to make her way over to me would get a $20 bill. I don't think I ever didn't have a drink in front of me after that first one was given, regardless of how quickly I'd drink them or how busy it got.
